After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. He has become the ascendant vessel of Chaos and amassed a terrible army with which to enact his will and vengeance. Before the being called the Emperor revealed himself, before the rise of the aeldari, before the necrontyr traded their flesh for immortal metal, the world was born in violence. Even when they inhabited bodies of flesh, Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner were polar opposites. Trazyn, a collector of historical oddities, presides over a gallery full of the most dangerous artefacts - and people - of the galactic past. Orikan, a chronomancer without peer, draws zodiacs that predict and manipulate the future.

Description
Book two in the Bequin series
Alizebeth Bequin's world has been turned upside-down. Now she must choose who she will follow as Inquisitors Eisenhorn and Ravenor battle to discover the secrets at the heart of Queen Mab.
Listen to it because
The latest chapter in Dan Abnett's Inquisition saga is here, and it's packed with shocking twists and stunning revelations that will change the way you look at the Warhammer 40,000 universe forever.
The story
In the mysterious city of Queen Mab, the forces of light and darkness are locked in a murderous struggle for truth. The dedicated agents of the Holy Inquisition battle with their shadowy counterparts, the infamous Cognitae, to discover the encrypted identity of the enigmatic, all-powerful King in Yellow. Caught at the heart of this struggle is the pariah Alizebeth Bequin. Will she stand with the Inquisition or with the Cognitae that raised her? And if she chooses the Inquisition, will it be the wise but ruthless Ravenor or his rival, the denounced heretic Eisenhorn? Bequin must withstand an onslaught of angels, daemons, and even the monstrous warriors of the Traitor Legions, to unpick the greatest riddle of her life.
The beloved characters of Eisenhorn and Ravenor return, as implaccable adversaries in a novel of esoteric mystery, macabre intrigue, and vivid action, where the revelation of true identity could mean death...or might shake the Imperium to its very foundations.

Fantastic mid point to an exciting trilogy
Unlike the first novel in this trilogy, which struggled to find its pacing and drive, the 2nd one is a constant ride of characters from the past, new faces and events that keep you surprised from moment to moment.
Definitely one that's worth your time to experience and a treat for anyone who's looking for more Ravenor and Eisenhorn tales in their lives.

God I hate cliffhangers
This is a great book. Very well written and a big improvement over it predecessor. If you just want a simple yay or nay, you can stop here; the story is good.
Now for some minor spoilers, but only for story structure.
The problem with a lot of planned trilogies is that their authors sometimes forget that each part needs to tell a complete story within the overarching story of the books. This is a trap that Dan Abnett has done a perfect swan dive into, and it seems like book one and two are also acts one and two respectively. This is a problem because it means that there's little in the way of a narrative arc through each book, which lead to me restarting both stories at different points because I simply dropped off of them. I'm sure book/act three will be suitably bombastic, but I really wish that each were allowed to be more their own thing.

a to z with gibberish in-between
it was good, but it relied too heavily on massive info dumps and coincidence. it felt like there was a beginning and end in mind, but the author rushed the points between.
