Description

This program includes an introduction read by the author.

A landmark history of 100 years of war waged against the Palestinians from the foremost US historian of the Middle East, told through pivotal events and family history.

In 1899, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, mayor of Jerusalem, alarmed by the Zionist call to create a Jewish national home in Palestine, wrote a letter aimed at Theodore Herzl: the country had an indigenous people who would not easily accept their own displacement. He warned of the perils ahead, ending his note, “in the name of God, let Palestine be left alone.” Thus Rashid Khalidi, al-Khalidi’s great-great-nephew, begins this sweeping history, the first general account of the conflict told from an explicitly Palestinian perspective.

Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members - mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists - The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age. He highlights the key episodes in this colonial campaign, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, from Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon to the endless and futile peace process.

Original, authoritative, and important, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine is not a chronicle of victimization, nor does it whitewash the mistakes of Palestinian leaders or deny the emergence of national movements on both sides. In reevaluating the forces arrayed against the Palestinians, it offers an illuminating new view of a conflict that continues to this day.

Thought provoking

I appreciated the history of the region being interwoven with the writer’s own family history. A moving and informative read.

United States isn’t an honest broker

I blame Anglo-Saxon settler colonists Great Britain and United States for the genocide of Palestinians. Unfortunately, many naive Jewish Israeli people are being abused and taken for a ride to further the interests of the White Man in the Middle East. The sooner Israelis wake up the better and start the reconciliation with the indigenous Palestinians.

Outstanding

This is highly recommended for anyone who wants to actually understand the Israeli conflict from a different perspective without all recriminations and rhetoric that we see in the news and on social media. The author is far more optimistic than he ought to have been, and that makes me sad. He poured his heart into the subject as a plea for both sides to change, and he must horribly sad by the recent trajectory of the conflict. Reading this book and listening to those who want peace is absolutely required right now, no matter your religion, political allegiance, or nationality.

A thorough review of the events of the past 100 years

An excellent overview of a very eventful period. This helps to untangle complexity and understand key dynamics

incredible historically accurate book

I am very impressed by the knowledge of the writter and I know he lived a lot of the opression and crimes against humanity living in the region at that time and hearing his own account is interesting. its heartbreaking how Zionism was used to create a genocide of the Palestinians. God is not to blame but mans twisted understanding of gods word and its use to create a genocide and gain public support from Christians worldwide. Israel is the Land of God but its completely horrific how people would support war if it is spoken about in the bible. Exterminating the palestinians is wrong on many levels, its always been an Arab owned land since ages and the british used Zionism to back their ethinic cleansing of Palestine. #FreePalestine

A historical account that is usually suppressed or downplayed in our western mainstream media

An even handed approach to the subject. The author does a great job of not only talking about Israel’s true history and motivations but also the corruption and failings of the Palestinian leadership, of which there were many.

Great overview of the Palestinian cause

I loved the author's personal anecdotes through the various phases of history. Also, his detailed and insider knowledge of the conflict deepened my understanding of this compmex issue. Great for beginners and veterans of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. One problem was that the narrator often mispronounced names of important leaders ("Be-geeen" drove me nuts). I highly recommend this book.

How uninformed we are.

Although I think of myself of a student of history, I was appalled at how much I and most of the west have ignored the issue of Palestine. The book is definitely a point of view from a firsthand Palestinian, who grew up and witnessed much of what he spoke. Although I’m sure there is bias in the story the overwhelming fact that are presented should make one week for the Palestinian people. This book is an eye-opener to what is going on these days and what continues to be played out. It is hard to think of solutions, when people is so subjugated and through that subjugation and terror, the result is more terror.

Setting the record straight

As a Canadian, I am familiar with the "settler" term. This is what Indigenous people call *me*.

Like most of us, I have been snowballed by the "negotiations." over Palestine. The people on the ground have never been represented in these "negotiations". For most of the last 100 years, they have never even been mentioned in UN resolutions related to Palestine. I have always been mystified by the behaviour of the Jews in Israel. It seemed so lawless and cruel. But now I understand that they are acting legally by their own rules. The entire land belongs to them. Non-Jews are effectively vermin.

As I write, Israel is in the business of bombing the open air of Gaza into rubble. Hamas's violent behaviour results from 100 years of bad-faith negotiations with the Jews. It's all that is left to them.

This book allowed me to see the entire project in a "colonial" light. The ultimate extermination of Palestinians is in line with what colonial powers have done throughout history. It is equivalent to the German desire for "lebensraum" or the brutal treatment of Native Americans by European settlers.

Must read! No doubt about it!

This eye-opening book should be read by all! Before Oct 7th, I thought I had a decent/basic understanding of the whole Israel/Palestine history.
Post Oct 7th, I spent a lot of time reading all I could online. I thought I learned a lot. I learned little..
This book lays it all out. Shocking...
Again, everyone should read or listen to this book!!!!
