Story
Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Publisher's Summary
Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013
Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Loved it! This is exactly what I was looking for. It had hints of JDITE by David Wong which I really enjoyed. The narrator was perfect and the characters had me feeling apart of their crazy gang.

Sci-Fi is not my thing but......
after reading the reviews, I thought I'd give it a try and it was lots of fun. the story is good and entertaining, maybe a bit out there, but I think that's normal for sci-fi. The narration was fantastic! I really liked this audiobook. Glad I took a chance on it.

78% mystery
While I throughly enjoyed this story, with its perfect narroration and contant mystery; I want to make a point of saying it took 8/12 hours for it to really feel like it belonged under sci-fi. A well worth it listen that will keep you engaged, with some heartfelt edges.

A Truly Original Story
To his credit, Peter Clines comes up with highly original stories. When I started reading this book, I was consistently surprised by the turns the plot took. This made the story highly captivating. The performance was excellent. I would have given it an even higher rating had it not had so much profanity. I realize this seems to be how people speak nowadays but I am a bit older and every time the F-bomb is dropped I wince. I don't enjoy hearing it and it is a distraction from what is otherwise an excellent story.

A very synergistic performance
This is the first novel I've read, but certainly not the first time I've had Ray Porter narrate for me. I was thrilled with the combination here.
I felt the story was well paced and as a fan of all things occult, I deeply enjoyed the strange path it walked me down.
Ray, as always, knocks the performance out of the park with vivid portrayals of the characters.

Ray Porter embodies all the characters bringing them to stunning life. And Peter Clines is like Jim Butcher and Dean Koontz rolled into one. The story is intriguing, characters are rich, and you just don't want to stop listening. I'm getting the next book right now!
