Publisher's Summary

A woman scorned...

All her life, Narnra of Waterdeep wondered who her father is. Amid the squalor of the streets, through the danger she faces daily as a thief in the City of Splendors, she speculates on whom the mysterious wizard might be who left her mother to raise a fatherless child.

Now she's discovered that it's no less a person than Elminster of Shadowdale, mightiest mage in all Faerian. And her anger is as boundless as his power.

The Elminster pattern is getting a little tired

Elminster has definitely been the Power Fantasy Mary Sue or Mary Sues. Always more powerful than everyone. Beds every woman and no one finds it creepy he's so braggy. Even his daughter seems to turn around her feeling in a moment.
I am sort of tired of hearing about how he's had grand adventures but there's nothing to reference. We take it on the author's word that he's done cool things.
I don't dislike the book, but it's plain that the series isn't getting better. The first book is probably the best. Each subsequent book has a lot going on, that sort of overlaps in places, but largely you can tune out and you didn't miss anything, because if you're paying attention it feels like you've missed something in the references all the time.
An ok book, but Greenwood is quickly running my patience out.
