Description

It's been two years since the events of Gangsterland, when legendary Chicago hit man Sal Cupertine disappeared into the guise of Vegas rabbi David Cohen. It's September 2001, and for David everything is coming up gold: temple membership is on the rise, the new private school is raking it in, and the mortuary and cemetery - where Cohen has been laundering bodies for the mob - is minting cash. But Sal wants out. He's got money stashed in safe-deposit boxes all over the city. He's looking at places to escape to - Mexico or maybe Argentina. He only needs to make it through the high holidays, and he'll have enough money to slip away, grab his wife and kid, and start fresh.

Across the country, former FBI agent Matthew Drew is now running security for an Indian casino outside Milwaukee, spending his off-time stalking members of the Family, looking for vengeance for the murder of his former partner. So when Sal's cousin stumbles into the casino one night, Matthew takes the law into his own hands - again - touching off a series of events that will have Rabbi Cohen running for his life, trapped in Las Vegas, with the law, society, and the post-9/11 world closing in around him.

Gangster Nation is a thrilling follow-up to Gangsterland, an unexpected examination of the seedy foundations of American life. With the wit and gritty glamour that defines his writing, Goldberg traces how the things we most value in our lives - home, health, even our spiritual lives - have been built on the enterprises of criminals.

Fntastic follow-up to Gangsterland

Gangsterland was the first Tod Goldberg novel I read. I loved it. Gangster Nation continues the story. I could not stop listening to this book, either. The 'bizarre' saga begun in the first book became more real, more believable in this book. Feeling the main character reluctantly morph into David, then whiplash back to Sal, then slip back to David was quite a ride. The way all the strings came together made the ending perfect. I am absolutely hooked on this fine writer. Thank you, Mr. Goldberg.

Screenplay-quality Mob Tale

Scorsese could do a lot with this story-arc. Tod Goldberg continues his captivating story about a hitman on-the-run posing as a Rabbi in a Jewish Community in Nevada while continuing to act as a "Fixer" for a Vegas gangster.

This episode:
• builds on the fascinating Sal Cupertine/David Cohen plotline (in this one Sal contemplates fully embracing the Rabbi persona or trying desperately to reunite with his wife & kid)
• follows the revenge-driven efforts of an ex-FBI Agent to find the assassin
• explores an opportunist violently trying to seize control of a cooperative criminal enterprise involving the Chicago Mafia ('The Family'), Mexican gangs/cartels (Gangster Two-Six) & Indigenous drug-runners ('The Native Mob')

The dialogue is realistic, the characters are surprisingly relatable, the crimes are out-of-the-headlines, and the plot is engrossing. I could easily see this gripping tale on the Big Screen someday.

Johnny Heller once again turns in a tour-de-force performance for this audiobook. His reading is spot-on in terms of tone, timbre, cadence, pacing, and voice-acting.
Heller is one of the best narrators I have heard in a long time. In fact, I have recently downloaded books just because he is attached to the project.

This book is definitely the second in a planned trilogy (it ends in a "cliffhanger" of sorts, for example). You are clearly enticed to read the other books in the series..
'Gangster Nation' actually has some standalone merit (you could conceivably read this 9/10 star book on it's own), but it's addictive.. you will *want* to read Book Three when it comes available.. and reading Book One will enrich your enjoyment of the novel, too.

[You obviously don't have to, but do yourself a favor.. read this book
..but read 'Gangsterland', too]
