Why does it feel so natural to be compassionate and kind to those we care about - yet so hard to treat ourselves the same way? "Our culture teaches us to use self-criticism for motivation and to build self-esteem by constantly measuring ourselves against everyone else," says Dr. Kristin Neff. "We need to re-learn the essential skill of being genuinely nurturing and supportive toward ourselves."

Perfectionism is a naturally limiting mindset. For example, kids are taught to color inside the lines, and any color outside the lines is considered a mistake that must be corrected. Most of us still live by the motto, “No pain, no gain.” But this approach to life is actually a prescription for fear, frustration, and self-doubt. Much of what we learn about success is based on the pain/gain idea: in essence, work harder, be more persistent, and develop greater willpower. The New Psycho-Cybernetics formula is anything but painful. It will allow you to achieve all your goals, faster, easier, and with less strain than you ever thought possible.

Story
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

Publisher's Summary
Discover the transformative effects of being kind to yourself
"This brilliant book offers us both the science and practice of how self-kindness is the secret sauce of fulfillment, transformation, and joy." (Lorin Roche, meditation teacher and author of The Radiance Sutras)
Many of us yearn to feel a greater sense of inner calm, ease, joy, and purpose. We have tried meditation and found it too difficult. We judge ourselves for being no good at emptying our minds (as if one ever could) or compare ourselves with yogis who seem to have it all together. We live in a steady state of "not good enough". It does not have to be this way.
In Good Morning, I Love You, Dr. Shauna Shapiro brings alive the brain science behind why we feel the way we do - about ourselves, each other, and the world - and explains why we get stuck in thinking that doesn’t serve us. It turns out that we are hardwired to be self-critical and negative! And this negativity is constantly undermining our experience of life.
"It is never too late to rewire your brain for positivity - for calm, clarity, and joy," writes Dr. Shapiro. "I know this is possible because I experienced it. Best of all, you can begin wherever you are." In short, lively chapters laced with science, wisdom, and story, Shapiro, one of the leading scientists studying the effects of mindfulness on the brain, shows us that acting with kindness and compassion toward ourselves is the key.
With her road map to guide you, including her signature "Good Morning, I Love You" practice, in which you deliberately greet yourself each day with these simple words, you can change your brain's circuitry and steady yourself in feelings of deep calm, clarity, and joy. For good.

Life-changing.
I couldn’t recommend this book more; and I’m thrilled I was able to listen to it being read by the author. So many parts I had to go back and listen to again as the were very meaningful. I found myself compelled to write notes while I listened; so much so I’ve decided I want the hardcopy.

Very helpful and insightful! life changing!
Ive always been interested in the practice of meditation and mindfulness, but I always felt that I lacked motivation or meaning when practicing it. this audible helped me understand how those practices can be applied on more specific/concrete examples. I love how she explain the importance of 1) intention 2) attention 3) attitude. Also there are many great simple exercises. The exercises are not always "fun" because it sometimes forces us to recall not so great memories, but I like how she guides us gently in those exercises and shows us the importance of facing those difficulties. I didn't feel any pressure or jugement about facing those thoughts, it really feels like I'm sharing them to a wise and kind friend who then comforts me and helps me feel okay with what has happened.

I love the science based information on our human brain and how we can rewire. The meditations are also extremely useful. This is a must have in any library.
