Description

From the New York Times best-selling authors of Mindhunter - former FBI agent John Douglas and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Mark Olshaker - comes an explosive look at how a high-profile murder case can test the limits of even the most seasoned investigator.

For 25 years, John E. Douglas worked for the FBI, where he headed the elite Investigative Support Unit. The real-life model for FBI Agent Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, he's had a brilliant and terrifying career, getting inside the minds of notorious murderers and serial killers such as Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and David Berkowitz (Son of Sam).

Written with long-time collaborator Mark Olshaker, Law and Disorder is Douglas' most provocative and personal book to date. In it, he addresses every law-enforcement professional's worst nightmare: those cases where, for one reason or another, justice was delayed - or even denied.

Through a series of character-driven case histories - from the earliest trials in Salem, Massachusetts, to the bungled trial of Amanda Knox - Douglas shows what happens when the system breaks down and bias, media coverage, and other influences get in the way of a dispassionate pursuit of the evidence. Here also are Douglas’ personal reflections on his ongoing search for the truth, from painful lessons learned early in his career to his controversial findings in the West Memphis Three and Jon Benet Ramsey investigations.

Brimming with procedural detail, Law and Disorder is an eye-opening insider’s account of the exhilaration and frustration that attend the quest for justice.

Pretty good but repetative to other titles

I enjoyed this book, but I found it covered a lot of things he has covered in previous books. I skipped past the Jon-Benet stuff because I just listened to it in "Cases That Haunt Us".

The narrator has a lot of hard "S"s which I found kind of distracting, but other than that he was pretty decent and animated.

Very interesting hearing the insights into the Memphis 3 (I hadn't realized John was even involved!) and the OJ Simpson case. I was very young when both of those happened so always felt a bit disconnected, but John does a good job at bringing the reader/listened back to that time.

Overall, if you liked his other books you'll like this, just remember it has a lot of the same in it from other books is all.

when law enforcement gets it wrong

I appreciate this take from John Douglas. It's interesting to see the other side, when law enforcement gets tunnel vision and gets it wrong. I think John Douglas handles the sensitive topic carefully and looks at it from all sides. Overall I enjoyed this book.

Good, but Repeated

I always enjoy books by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker, but I find that they tend to reuse cases throughout a lot of their books. I suppose that makes sense, given that there are only so many cases they have worked on throughout their careers. And, to be fair, I’m always fascinated to hear about them, which is why I still give this 5 stars. But if that’s something that would bother you, it’s something to keep in mind.

Compelling and well performed.

There's nothing to detract from the powerful message so clearly transmitted by the authors. Absorbing, educational, and with the right touch of emotion. Off to download anything else I can find by them!

More of the same

Definitely not worth the listen. Regurgitating stuff that has been beaten to death a thousand times over. Definitely using his name for a cash grab.

Pretty good

Not as exciting as some of his previous books, but still well written and interesting. This book focuses on the failings of the justice system when innocent people are found guilty and guilty people escape justice. The narrator is pretty good - clear and speaks with emotion, but he should NEVER attempt a British accent.
