Number Six on the 2019 Kids’ Indie Next List

"A brilliant debut, full of everything I love: a sparkling and fully realized heroine, an intricate and deadly system of magic, and a searing romance that kept me reading long into the night. Serpent & Dove is an absolute gem of a book." (Sarah J. Maas, number one New York Times best-selling author of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series)

Bound as one, to love, honor, or burn. Book one of a stunning fantasy duology, this tale of witchcraft and forbidden love is perfect for fans of Kendare Blake and Sara Holland.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation - marriage.

Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

Set in a world of powerful women, dark magic, and off-the-charts romance, book one of this stunning fantasy trilogy will leave listeners burning for more.

Amazing Story!

I love this book! It’s one of my 2019 favourites and I was excited to get it on audible for some easy listening. The narrater for Lou was fabulous and really captured the character and her mannerisms well. The narrator for Reid ... honestly was not. I had to pause a few time during his chapters just to rally myself up to power through them. I personally found his reading rhythm very choppy and breathy and he tended to give all his male characters the same “gruff/nasally” voice. The story is fantastic and I do highly suggest Serpent & Dove, I would just be prepared if you listen to the audiobook vs. Reading it yourself.

Captivating

This is a really captivating story and not at all what I had expected it to be. The world building and the characters are intriguing, the plot keeps you engaged and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Saskia Maarleveld is my favourite audiobook narrator and I think she gives an excellent voice and character to Lou. Holter gives a good performance but his reading style is not my cup of tea.

Don't listen to this if you can speak french

The narrators can't say any french word without mistakes. It's very disruptive since there's a lot of french word in this.

Great Story!

Loved the Female performance. the Male performance wasn't great. The female makes him sounds deep and slow speaking. The male sounds quick and higher toned. Doesn't match the character. Still worth it! Great story!

Great read

Enjoyed this book more than I was expecting!! Looking forward to the sequel. The female narrator was lovely! The male narrator was ok, but I did enjoy the blending of the two.

Finished in 1.5 days :)

The narration (especially Reid's) wasn't that great, but the story was fantastic. Slowburn enemies to forbidden lovers with a dash of fake marriage? Hell yeah.

decent but not great

It was okay. That's really all I can say. Main male lead wasn't very likable, I know that he was supposed to be a hardend witch hunter but I just couldn't seem to like him. His voice actor did him no justice either.

A great read

This book easily kept my attention from beginning to end. Adventure was good, characters were good, plot was good, romance was good, spice was a little more minimal but there was a love scene. Will be getting the rest of this series. Not a waste of time. Enjoy

the love story i didn't want totally sucked me in

I was looking for a new fantasy book that didn't have a romance at its core but stumbled on this book and something about it drew me in, so I purchased it. I quickly felt drawn to Lou, this spunky girl who acted like she didn't have a care in the world and dove in head first despite literally the fate of her world on her shoulders. Then she is essentially forced to marry the man who vowed to kill witches, like her. Somehow, Lou brings light to those she meets, including Reed who finds everything he thought he knew called into question. It all, just works! The world building is wonderful, and I can't wait to explore more of it in the next book.

For narration, Saskia does a marvelous job! I have read another book of hers and was pleasantly surprised at how different she sounded voicing Lou. Her French pronunciation was also wonderful, although I don't know why they decided to have her say "foyer" the American way repeatedly. It seems like an oversight.

Holter's narration was pretty good. His French accent wasn't as good, but decent enough that I could look past it. For the most part I was able to tell the voices of the characters apart but there were some spots near the end where I couldn't tell who was speaking or even if it was a man or a woman. But those spots were short lived.

Overall great book!
