It began as rumors. Whispers at dinner parties. Warnings about bad dates with a Canadian celebrity. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, superstar CBC broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi revealed his interest in "rough sex" in a long Facebook post, and a scandal of unprecedented scale descended on the radio host. What the public did not know was that months before Ghomeshi's emotional post, Canadaland podcaster Jesse Brown and Toronto Star journalist Kevin Donovan were quietly pursuing serious allegations against him.

Story
As news broke of a killer rampaging across the tiny community of Portapique, Nova Scotia, late on April 18, 2020, details were oddly hard to come by. Who was the killer? Why was he not apprehended? What were police doing? How many were dead? And why was the gunman still on the loose the next morning and killing again? The RCMP was largely silent then, and continued to obscure the actions of denturist Gabriel Wortman after an officer shot and killed him at a gas station during a chance encounter.

Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Story
I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me to the point of obsession.

In 2013, the Toronto Police Service announced that the disappearances of three men—Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, and Majeed Kayhan—from Toronto's gay village were, perhaps, linked. On January 18, 2018, Bruce McArthur would be arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, and later sentenced for the murders of eight men. This book tells the complete story of the McArthur murders. Based on more than five years of in-depth reporting, this is also a story of police failure, of how the queer community responded, and the story of the eight men and the lives they left behind.

A top journalist crosses the yellow tape to investigate a shocking high-society crime.
Billionaires, philanthropists, socialites...victims. Barry and Honey Sherman appeared to lead charmed lives. But the world was shocked in late 2017 when their bodies were found in a bizarre tableau in their elegant Toronto home. First described as murder-suicide - belts looped around their necks, they were found seated beside their basement swimming pool - police later ruled it a staged, targeted double murder. Nothing about the case made sense to friends of the founder of one of the world’s largest generic pharmaceutical firms and his wife, a powerhouse in Canada’s charity world. Together, their wealth has been estimated at well over $4.7 billion.
There was another side to the story. A strategic genius who built a large generic drug company - Apotex Inc. - Barry Sherman was a self-described workaholic, renowned risk-taker, and disruptor during his 50-year career. Regarded as a generous friend by many, Sherman was also feared by others. He was criticized for stifling academic freedom and using the courts to win at all costs. Upset with building issues at his mansion, he sued and recouped millions from tradespeople. At the time of his death, Sherman had just won a decades-old legal case involving four cousins who wanted 20 percent of his fortune.
Toronto Star investigative journalist Kevin Donovan chronicles the unsettling story from the beginning, interviewing family members, friends, and colleagues, and sheds new light on the Shermans’ lives and the disturbing double murder. Deeply researched and authoritative, The Billionaire Murders is a compulsively listenable tale of a strange and perplexing crime.

Very good
This book has been very well researched and offers various insights into what could have happened in this most unusual case. the facts are laid out in an easy to follow format and information used is given by many different people close to the Sherman's both in life and after their death. I enjoyed this book although it does have a tendency to be a little repetitive in a couple of chapters hence why it is a 4 star and not a 5.

Just like the book I thought I'd start this review by being repetitive. Great story, great content with no end unfortunately. Real life doesn't always allow for the story to wrap itself up.

VERY INFORMATIVE
I was really caught up with this story. I thought Kevin Donovan was an excellent narrator. The writing is in “news story” format but that’s ok it’s like Kevin is sitting in your living room giving you the scoop. I learned a lot about the Sherman’s and their lives and subsequent deaths. Contrary to other comments, I appreciated learning about the pharmaceutical industry. It clearly played a major role in their lives. It is sad to think the killers have not been found. In my opinion the Toronto police were/are clearly negligent. I’m no detective but from the outside looking in I think someone they knew did it. I also think someone who was in a position to gain a lot of money by killing them both. If it was a deal gone wrong, why kill Honey. Follow the money with both dead who stands to gain. Just my opinion. Anyway good book, very informative. Maybe people in Toronto knew all this but I’m in the west and the case did not get huge coverage out here. Glad I bought it. I know much more about the case now.

Interesting insights
I enjoyed the background on the Shermans since I knew nothing about them. But I would have appreciated a more in-depth analysis of the evidence. He's effectively a legal drug dealer. Drug dealers are known to murder and get murdered. Perhaps that should have been explored more?

I loved the way this book was being read.I I love in Toronto and it was almost as if we should have known them. Very interesting to know what the couple was really like. I feel like it was someone that new them very well that killed them. A great read. I highly recommend it. I will read it again in the future.
