Publisher's Summary

Once, we’d worshipped them as Gods.

For nearly 400 years, the Veil has protected us from the Fae of Alfheimr. In their absence, our lives have shifted from decadence and sin to survival and virtue under the guidance of the New Gods. I’ve spent my entire life tending to the gardens next to the boundary between our worlds, drawn to the shimmering magic like a moth to the flame.

Then, we died on their swords.

All of that changes the day the Veil shatters, unleashing the fae upon our world once again. The magic of faerie marks those of us they mean to take, but the Mist Guard protecting Nothrek will kill us all before they let the fae have us. There’s no choice but to flee everything I’ve ever known, not if I want to live to see my twenty-first birthday as a free woman.

Now, they’ll claim what’s theirs.

But before they capture me, Caelum saves me from the Wild Hunt. Fae-marked and on the run, he is able to fight back in ways I only dream of. From tentative alliance to all-consuming passion, our bond strengthens as the fae close in and evil lurks ever nearer. With my life on the line, he is everything I shouldn’t dare to want and a distraction I can’t afford. I can’t seem to stay away, not even with something greater on the line.

My heart.

Recommended to Me

I was hoping for so much more here - the narrator was good and had a fantastic cadence while reading. The story plot line was not great, super sad to use a credit on this.

Condescending love interest

I am disappointed because I liked the beginning of the book a lot. The world building potential was there but the characters were shallow and the dialogue was repetitive. Any growth the protagonist had was offset by the love interest becoming increasingly controlling in what felt at the end like an abusive dynamic. The constant use of her belittling pet name was aggravating and unnecessary. I stuck it out to the end but I don’t feel a pull to move on to book 2

A very meh book

Well this was a book I listened to. The narrator wasn't bad - she does a good job of different character voices. But the story and characters. meh. If you are into books with unpredictable twists and character development this is not the book for you. If you think that Jennifer Armentrout is the best thing since sliced bread then this may be the book for you - annoying characters that do stupid things for no reason and have the personality of a wet sponge.

The second book is even worse and I am close to DNF. There just may be a reason this book is free....

Super predictable. 🫤

Reminded me a little too much of Sara J Maas books. Almost like a bunch of authors were given a challenge to write about a poor human who is stolen by a deceitful fae and falls in love, yada yada yada.
All the tells were too obvious in the first 3rd of the book and I found myself rolling my eyes a bit too often.
The story would have been okay if it hadn’t been so predictable. 🫤🤷🏻‍♀️

Hollow Characters

I really wanted to like this book. The story had potential but the character development was lacking.

On the fence

I enjoyed the story line until the chauvinistic side of one of the main characters came out. I am going to read the next one hoping the next one calms down after the turn of events at the end.

Narrator was a bust

The narrator really ruined this story for me using different tones of her voice to play different characters, including the male characters. If she had just used her regular voice for all characters or they used a male to voice the male characters it would’ve been a lot better. I had a hard time getting through this story because of that.

Slow burn romance that keeps you hooked

The author does a great job of revealing the world of the fae to us slowly, through our heroine’s eyes. I am intrigued to see where she takes us next.

If you like romance where there are fated lovers, this one is for you. He wants her, she’s too broken and tired of being battered by life to say yes. She is afraid to give in, but wants to. It seems right, but she just can’t.

Great performance! I am looking forward to the sequel Oct 25th.
