Story
It’s always been easier for Cara Hargraves to bury herself in the past than confront the present, which is why working with a gruff but brilliant antiques dealer is perfect. While clearing out an estate, she pries open an old tin that holds the relics of a lost relationship: among the treasures, a World War II-era diary and a photograph of a young woman in uniform. Eager to find the author of the hauntingly beautiful, unfinished diary, Cara digs into this soldier’s life, but soon realizes she may not have been ready for the stark reality of wartime London she finds....

Story
James A. Michener's masterly chronicle of South Africa is an epic tale of adventurers, scoundrels, and ministers, the best and worst of two continents, who carve an empire out of a vast wilderness. Publisher's Summary
This inspirational New York Times best seller chronicles the lifelong friendship between a busy sales executive and a disadvantaged young boy and how both of their lives were changed by what began as one small gesture of kindness.
“A straightforward tale of kindness and paying it forward in 1980s New York...an uplifting reminder that small gestures matter.” (Kirkus Reviews)
Stopping was never part of the plan....
She was a successful ad sales rep in Manhattan. He was a homeless 11-year-old panhandler on the street. He asked for spare change; she kept walking. But then something stopped her in her tracks, and she went back. And she continued to go back, again and again. They met up nearly every week for years and built an unexpected, life-changing friendship that has today spanned almost three decades.
Whatever made me notice him on that street corner so many years ago is clearly something that cannot be extinguished, no matter how relentless the forces aligned against it. Some may call it spirit. Some may call it heart. It drew me to him, as if we were bound by some invisible, unbreakable thread. And whatever it is, it binds us still.

Totally touching and heartwarming
Fantastic read, the pace is steady and the story fantastic. I don’t cry a lot but this book certainly brings on the waterworks! I find a lot of books that are whiny and attempting to pull you in but they often miss the mark. This book is not written by an overly dramatic author but it’s story and message is totally touching in a very genuine way.

Powerful
Absolutely loved yes heart wrenching story. The fact that it is a true story it’s overwhelming and I can’t imagine how many more people are on the streets like Maurice and how many more people do not notice them such as Laura. My heart melts to think the two of them had this bond and changed their lives. I would highly recommend this book for everyone

Beautiful and uplifting
There is so much that I appreciate about this book. Thank you to the author for not delving into an explanation of intergenerational trauma of black Americans, which is not her story to tell. I appreciate that space was saved for Maurice to tell himself in the epilogue. My 16 year old son and I listened during an eleven hour drive through the Rocky Mountains. We thoroughly enjoyed the story and the performance of the reading of the story. Thank you.
