Histoire
Joe Simpson, with just his partner, Simon Yates, tackled the unclimbed West Face of the remote 21,000-foot Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in June of 1985. But before they reached the summit, disaster struck. A few days later, Simon staggered into Base Camp, exhausted and frostbitten, to tell their non-climbing companion that Joe was dead. For three days he wrestled with guilt as they prepared to return home. Then a cry in the night took them out with torches, where they found Joe, badly injured.

Histoire
What does it take to be one of the world's best high-altitude mountain climbers? A lot of fundraising; traveling in some of the world's most dangerous countries; enduring cold bivouacs, searing lungs, and a cloudy mind when you can least afford one. It means learning the hard lessons the mountains teach. Steve House built his reputation on ascents throughout the Alps, Canada, Alaska, the Karakoram, and the Himalaya that have expanded possibilities of style, speed, and difficulty.

Histoire
In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

Histoire
At 28,251 feet, the world's second-tallest mountain, K2 thrusts skyward out of the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. Climbers regard it as the ultimate achievement in mountaineering, with good reason. Four times as deadly as Everest, K2 has claimed the lives of seventy-seven climbers since 1954. In August 2008 eleven climbers died in a single thirty-six-hour period on K2–the worst single-event tragedy in the mountain's history and the second-worst in the long chronicle of mountaineering in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges.

Description
When Edmund Hillary first conquered Mt. Everest, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was at his side. Indeed, for as long as Westerners have been climbing the Himalaya, Sherpas have been the unsung heroes in the background. In August 2008, when eleven climbers lost their lives on K2, the world’s most dangerous peak, two Sherpas survived. They had emerged from poverty and political turmoil to become two of the most skillful mountaineers on earth. Based on unprecedented access and interviews, Buried in the Sky reveals their astonishing story for the first time.
Peter Zuckerman and Amanda Padoan explore the intersecting lives of Chhiring Dorje Sherpa and Pasang Lama, following them from their villages high in the Himalaya to the slums of Kathmandu, across the glaciers of Pakistan to K2 Base Camp. When disaster strikes in the Death Zone, Chhiring finds Pasang stranded on an ice wall, without an axe, waiting to die. The rescue that follows has become the stuff of mountaineering legend.
At once a gripping, white-knuckled adventure and a rich exploration of Sherpa customs and culture, Buried in the Sky re-creates one of the most dramatic catastrophes in alpine history from a fascinating new perspective.

Incredible- a must read
Having read other other reports of mountain tragedies, I was blown away with the depth of reporting on the too often untold story of the guides and support personnel. Masterful work and quality reading.

story was good but too much folklore
the actual story I enjoyed but a good part of the beginning of the book was on the local folklore which I didn't understand why it was necessary to go through that

Great book spoiled by poor narration
Horrible imitations of accents and sound effects made a fabulous book excruciating to listen to.

Good story, narrator needs work
Storyline is great. A good mix of culture, history and climbing stories. The narrator though, needs to give up on the accents and the overemphasized pronunciation of certain words. Not everyone is in tune with the pronunciation of foreign words. Makes him sound pompous.

Beautifully written
Well researched and written book, and the narrator does a beautiful job with all the pronunciation. Ignore the previous review regarding accents because he does great.

Misleading...more a history of sherpas then anything
This book is not what it seems. Contrary to being advertised as a book about events that happened on K2 in 2008 it is actually a long drawn out history about sherpas and nothing to do with the events on K2 I got a couple hours into it and simply couldn’t stand it anymore. The worst part is I actually paid money for this as opposed to using a creditSo now I have to wait 10 days to get my money back to buy another book which really sucks. From now on I will only use my credits and not take a chance spending money on a book in order to have to wait two weeks for a refund! Grrr.
