Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
This Penguin Classic is performed by Andrew Scott, star of Sherlock, Fleabag, and Black Mirror, also known for his on-stage roles in Present Laughter and Hamlet. This definitive recording includes an introduction by Terence Brown.
Joyce's first major work, written when he was only twenty-five, brought his city to the world for the first time. His stories are rooted in the rich detail of Dublin life, portraying ordinary, often defeated lives with unflinching realism. He writes of social decline, sexual desire and exploitation, corruption and personal failure, yet creates a brilliantly compelling, unique vision of the world and of human experience.
What the critics say
"Scott's intonation and pacing made the book really easy to follow, and the fact that every chapter is a full story kept me engaged for much longer than if I was reading it on the page." (i News)

Amazing performance
Andrew Scott did an amazing job of bringing these stories to life. I have listened to this book several times and I really appreciate his honest and sensitive treatment of the work. It is a great listen!

Read like a Play
The narration, which is an understatement - it's read like a one man play, is by far the best I've heard . The accents and mannerisms add a layer to the stories I could never get by simply reading the book myself.

Need a different narrator
I like Joyce but could not continue with this book solely due to the narrator. I find it hard to understand some portions due to way the narrator would often end a sentence very “lightly” such that I could not catch the last few words. Some dialogue were also hard to follow as the narrator tries to add theatrical effect or tone but it is executed poorly. Currently downloading this book again with a different narrator…

bad narration
if I could leave zero star for performance I would have. the thing is...I highly suggest you find a different performer for this book. God knows how happy I am that I no loner have to listen to his voice.
