Steve Jobs called Jony Ive his “spiritual partner at Apple.” The London-born genius was the second-most powerful person at Apple and the creative force who most embodies Jobs’s spirit, the man who designed the products adopted by hundreds of millions the world over: the iPod, iPad, MacBook Air, the iMac G3, and the iPhone.

Famously, over a four-year period, James Dyson made 5,127 prototypes of the cyclonic vacuum cleaner that would transform the way houses are cleaned around the world. In devoting all his resources to iteratively developing the technology, he risked it all, but out of many failures and setbacks came hard-fought success. In Invention: A Life, Dyson reveals how he came to set up his own company and led it to become one of the most inventive technology companies in the world. It is a compelling and dramatic tale, with many obstacles overcome.

Simplicity isn’t just a design principle at Apple - it’s a value that permeates every level of the organization. The obsession with Simplicity is what separates Apple from other technology companies. It’s what helped Apple recover from near death in 1997 to become the most valuable company on Earth in 2011. Thanks to Steve Jobs’s uncompromising ways, you can see Simplicity in everything Apple does: the way it’s structured, the way it innovates, and the way it speaks to its customers.

The death of Steve Jobs left a gaping void at one of the most innovative companies of all time. Jobs wasn't merely Apple's iconic founder and CEO; he was the living embodiment of a global megabrand. It was hard to imagine that anyone could fill his shoes - especially not Tim Cook, the intensely private executive who many thought of as Apple's "operations drone". But seven years later, as journalist Leander Kahney reveals in this definitive audiobook, things at Apple couldn't be better.

Why do some products capture our attention, while others flop? What makes us engage with certain products out of habit? Is there a pattern underlying how technologies hook us? This audiobook introduces listeners to the "Hooked Model", a four-step process companies use to build customer habits. Through consecutive cycles through the hook, successful products reach their ultimate goal of bringing users back repeatedly - without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging.

Decline can be avoided. Decline can be detected. Decline can be reversed. Amidst the desolate landscape of fallen great companies, Jim Collins began to wonder: How do the mighty fall? Can decline be detected early and avoided? How far can a company fall before the path toward doom becomes inevitable and unshakable? How can companies reverse course?

Few entrepreneurs can claim to have radically changed the way we live, and Ray Kroc is one of them. His revolutions in food-service automation, franchising, shared national training, and advertising have earned him a place beside the men and women who have founded not only businesses, but entire empires. But even more interesting than Ray Kroc the business man is Ray Kroc the man. Not your typical self-made tycoon, Kroc was 52 years old when he opened his first franchise.

Description
The best-selling author of Inside Steve's Brain profiles Apple's legendary chief designer, Jonathan Ive.
Jony Ive's designs have not only made Apple one of the most valuable companies in the world; they've overturned entire industries, from music and mobile phones to PCs and tablets.
But for someone who has changed the world as much as he has, little is widely known about Apple's senior vice president of industrial design. Unlike his former boss and creative partner Steve Jobs, Ive shuns the spotlight. Naturally shy and soft-spoken, he lets his work speak for itself and concerns himself only with his craft.
In the first book to focus on Ive, Leander Kahney offers a rigorous and systematic examination of a remarkably creative career and provides insight into the principles underlying Ive's success.
Having covered Apple as an editor since the 1990s and interviewed Ive on numerous occasions, Kahney offers a unique perspective on how this man designs killer products that attract fanatically loyal customers.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"An adulating biography of Apple’s left-brained wunderkind, whose work continues to revolutionize modern technology.” (Kirkus Reviews)

It's more about the essence than the content
This isn't a book I would recommend to most people. It's not particularly fascinating or even educational, but being in the manufacturing business and an admirer of Apple's quality and brand, there were bits and pieces that helped me better understand how to build an exceptional manufacturing business. Most people think of Apple as a tech company, but they really are a manufacturing company. Somewhere in the book the author says that Apple's design team spent 10% of their time on design and 90% on figuring out how to manufacture it.
From what I gathered, they would spend 80% of their time figuring out 20% of the fine details that most other companies ignored. And this was for every part of the product life cycle--from supply chain and manufacturing to how the user might engage the product in unique ways.
As my title alludes to, it's really the essence of the stories in the book that I found really beneficial. I have a better idea of what kind of people to recruit for a design team, how to approach projects, what is most important etc. Not to mention just HOW much failure to expect. It also reinforced some of my beliefs--ie. I've always believed the packaging is almost as important as the product, and sure enough, Jonny Ive spent just as much time designing the packaging as he did the product.
If you just want to run a manufacturing business, this book isn't for you, but if you want to build an enduring brand that continually innovates and exceeds customer's expectations, this book provides some refreshing insights.

Essex lad makes good.
This was an interesting journey into the world of product design. Although not very technical or detailed (and in some cases just wrong... insert molding is not the same as metal injection molding!), it was full of interesting anecdotes about the development of various Apple products, and about the man who led the team of talented designers and engineers who created them.

Interesting content, timeline broken
This book has interesting content, but jumps around too much to be able to make a logical stream of events and development. Don’t bother reading honestly, main takeaway is Johnny is important to apple as he is the soul of the design.
