Publisher's Summary

Out of the Silent Planet is the first novel of the Cosmic Trilogy, considered to be C.S. Lewis' chief contribution to the science fiction genre. The trilogy concerns Dr. Ransom, a linguist, who, like Christ, was offered a ransom for mankind. The first two novels are planetary romances with elements of medieval mythology. Each planet is seen as having a tutelary spirit; those of the other planets are both good and accessible, while that of Earth is fallen, twisted, and not known directly by most humans. The story is powerfully imagined, and the effects of lesser gravity on Martian planet and animal life is vividly rendered.

silent planet

This is the first book I've read by C.S. Lewis other than the Narnia books. This one was good too. I was surprised which planet was the silent planet.

Times never change.

A master piece from C.S. Lewis. Great depth of meaning within layers upon layers.

Great Thoughtful Read!

As someone who has not spent a lot of time reading sci-fi, this was a great way to enter the genre. This is a quick read and the narration is great. This text is full of adventure but also theology and metaphysical considerations. I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

Beautiful story.

What a beautiful story. The main character using his knowledge, was able to show other sentient beings the best of humanity.

This was a surprisingly good story since I knew nothing but only picked it up because of the author.

I've listened to this dozens of times

This story captured my imagination so much that I've gone back to it over and over. I never would have thought that a Sci-Fi from the 1930s could capture me like this. I love the world Lewis created on Malacandra. I found it rich, imaginative, beautiful, and fun. I especially loved the inhabitants of this world (I'm being careful not to include spoilers). They are varied and delightful. I also loved the characters. Ransom, the word nerd, was a very thoughtful man, and generally a projection of Lewis himself, I thought. Hyoi, my goodness, I would love to be his friend. The varied peoples of this world were so interesting, and the mythology was so engaging for me, that I wished the book were much longer.

Geoffrey Howard did an excellent job with the narration as well. I could listen to him all day.

Note that this book is rather light on the science for a Sci-Fi. You won't find schematics for a rocket ship in here. Just a great story, and a great start to the trilogy (and in my opinion, better than the other books in the trilogy, although Perelandra was pretty good as well).

great story

It is a great story, my biggest gripe however is in the way with which the author tries to describe things that don't quite portray a clear picture

Complete Package

I love this series, some of his best work and somewhat overshadowed by his other work. Wish they would make these movies. And Ralph Cosham IS the voice of CS Lewis, his narration is perfect.

One of the best books in the audible + collection

Honestly one of my favorite listens of the year. literally my only complaint is that they referred to snakes as poisonous and not venomous
