Story
Atlanta, 1974: It's Kate Murphy's first day on the job, and the Atlanta Police Department is seething after the murder of an officer. Before the day has barely begun, she already suspects she's not cut out to be a cop. Her male uniform is too big, she can't handle a gun, and she's rapidly learning that the APD is hardly a place that welcomes women. Worse still, in the ensuing manhunt she'll be partnered with Maggie Lawson, a cop with her own ax to grind.

Publisher's Summary
Detective Sam Kovac is as hard-boiled as they come, and his wisecracking partner, Nikki Liska, isn't far behind. Neither one wants to be on this case, but when Karl Dahl escapes from custody, everything changes, and a seemingly straightforward case cartwheels out of control. The stakes go even higher when the judge is kidnapped, snatched out of her own bed even as the police sit outside, watching her house. Now Kovac and Liska must navigate through a maze of suspects that includes the stepson of a murder victim, a husband with a secret life, and a rogue cop looking for revenge where the justice system failed. With no time to spare, the detectives are pulled down a strange dark trail of smoke and mirrors, where no one is who they seem and everyone is guilty of Prior Bad Acts.
What the critics say
"The breathtaking plot twists are perfectly paced in this compulsive page-turner." (Publishers Weekly)

Inconceivable but fun, kinda
Best parts of this story are the main characters. The plot itself was way over the top. Holtor Graham did a fine job reading it. Over all a mindless, somewhat entertaining way to kill 12 hours.

The narration is terrible.
The story is good, I like Tami Hoag and I love these characters. However, Holter Graham reads this book like William Shatner; with emphasis on every second word. At times he rushes through a sentence, then says the last few words. One. At. A. Time. It's infuriating. I returned the book.

Narrator is horrible
Great book but a horrible narrator. I had to stop listening to the audio book and go buy a paperback because of the narrator.
