As a boy, Elias learned the hard way what happens when you don’t heed the old tales. Nine years after his lack of superstition got his father killed, he’s grown into a young man of piety, with a deep reverence for the hallowed sea and her fickle favor. As stories of the fisherman’s son who has managed to escape the most deadly of storms spreads from port to port, his devotion to the myths and creeds has given him the reputation of the luckiest bastard to sail the Narrows.

Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. "Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Description
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “Lush with secrets, magic, and a past that won’t stay where it belongs, this novel is (quite fittingly) spellbinding.”—JODI PICOULT, author of Wish You Were Here
A deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true love
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: She Reads
Emery Blackwood’s life changed forever the night her best friend was found dead and the love of her life, August Salt, was accused of murdering her. Years later, she is doing what her teenage self swore she never would: living a quiet existence on the misty, remote shores of Saoirse Island and running the family’s business, Blackwood’s Tea Shoppe Herbal Tonics & Tea Leaf Readings. But when the island, rooted in folklore and magic, begins to show signs of strange happenings, Emery knows that something is coming. The morning she wakes to find that every single tree on Saoirse has turned color in a single night, August returns for the first time in fourteen years and unearths the past that the town has tried desperately to forget.
August knows he is not welcome on Saiorse, not after the night everything changed. As a fire raged on at the Salt family orchard, Lily Morgan was found dead in the dark woods, shaking the bedrock of their tight-knit community and branding August a murderer. When he returns to bury his mother’s ashes, he must confront the people who turned their backs on him and face the one wound from his past that has never healed—Emery. But the town has more than one reason to want August gone, and the emergence of deep betrayals and hidden promises spanning generations threaten to reveal the truth behind Lily’s mysterious death once and for all.
Ce que les critiques en disent
“With magic, murder, and prose that reads like music, Spells for Forgetting weaves together an immersive tale on the Pacific Coast island of Saoirse, where love and pain both stick to the too.”―Chandler Baker, New York Times bestselling author of The Husbands
“A thrilling, rich mystery with exquisite twists, Adrienne Young’s adult debut will trick you, bewitch you, and leave you begging for more.”―Stephanie Garber, author of the Caraval series
“Tense, lyrical, and wholly romantic, Spells for Forgetting is as immersive a story as you could ask for. I could feel the salt on my skin, I could smell the smoke, and every page felt like a tentative step into a mist concealing all of Saoirse’s darkest secrets.”―Ruth Emmie Lang, Ohioana Book Award finalist

Best Adrienne Young novel since her debut
I fell in love with Adrienne Young's writing the day she published Sky in The Deep, but the Fable series didn't speak to me the way her initial books had. I had bought Spells for Forgetting as a preorder and only started it now, as I was afraid I would once again be disappointed.
I was not. Spells for Forgetting is so quintessentially steeped in a magical, mysterious, fall atmosphere, the island life on Saoirse is so vivid, so beautifully described and written that I've found it irresistible. All this is laced with complex, well-written characters, an interesting narrative and a beautiful love story full of yearning, written in the best way possible.
I found spells for forgetting interesting, lyrically beautiful, and generally unputdownable.
I can't wait for June Farrow to come out, now!
TW: child abuse, death (murder), fire-induced injuries, manipulation

Beautifully written!
I loved this book and the narrators. The story had beautiful imagery and although it started a tad slow, it was a mystery that just kept unfolding. The magic throughout the book was not overdone or far fetched leaving me feel like magic could actually be real.

Fun read, but tries to do too much *lite spoilers*
Fun read and enjoyable. However it tries to fit too much without fleshing out all the ideas. Magic is part of the story but not enough throughout, so it makes the ending less believable. Thriller aspects are okay, but could have been made stronger.
It felt like such a good concept but like a movie that has too many scenes cut because it’s too long, sometimes it lacked that expansion and context that would make it amazing.

Didn’t hit the mark
I was so excited for this book release as I loved Young’s previous book. Unfortunately it just didn’t hit the mark. There wasn’t much of a plot as it was more a glorified love story with a hint of mystery. It was overall pretty boring. The voice actors were phenomenal though!

Very slow
Unfortunate this novel dragged on for many chapters repeating the same thing. I reached chapter 20 with no new occurrence. This book is too uneventful for me to finish and have returned it.
