In his 17 years as a Formula 1 driver, Jenson Button has picked up a thing or two about how to do the job properly. Sure, you need to be able to drive a car fast - and Jenson is on hand to pass on a few tricks of the trade here - but you also need to know the real rules for making it to the top. Like, how to tell a multiple F1 champion they need to check their blind spot. What the difference is between a helmet and a hat, and indeed a 'helmet-hat'. How to practise your champagne spray ahead of the big day.

No Hollywood scriptwriter could possibly have envisioned the breathless, adrenaline-pumping climax to the 2021 Formula 1 season. On the very last lap of the final race of an unbelievably arduous and controversial season, Red Bull's Max Verstappen nervelessly overtook the seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes to clinch the first place that thrust the young prodigy to the narrowest of victories and to his first World Drivers' title. He followed up by taking the 2022 title as well.

Story
For decades in America, car racing meant NASCAR, and to a lesser extent IndyCar, with Formula 1—the wealthiest racing league in the world—a distant third. Fast forward to 2023, and F1 has emerged at the front of the pack powered by a passionate yet nascent American fanbase. The F1 juggernaut has arrived, but this checkered flag was far from inevitable.

Carroll Shelby wasn’t born to run. He was born to race - some of the fastest cars ever to tear up a speedway. The exciting new feature film Ford v Ferrari - starring Matt Damon as Shelby and Christian Bale as fellow racer Ken Miles - immortalizes the small-town Texas boy who won the notorious Le Mans 24-hour endurance challenge and changed the face of auto racing with the legendary Shelby Cobra. But there’s much more to his high-velocity, history-making story.

“People talk about football managers being under pressure. Trust me, that's nothing. Pressure is watching one of your drivers hit a barrier at 190mph and exploding before your eyes...”
In Surviving to Drive, Haas team principal Guenther Steiner brings listeners inside his Formula 1 team for the entirety of the 2022 season, giving an unobstructed view of what really takes place behind the scenes. Through this unique lens, Steiner guides listeners on the thrilling rollercoaster of life at the heart of high-stakes motor racing. Packed full of twists and turns, from pre-season preparations to hiring and firing drivers, from the design, launch, and testing of a car to the race calendar itself–Surviving to Drive is the first time that an Formula 1 team has allowed an acting team principal to tell the full story of a whole season.
Uncompromising and searingly honest, told in Steiner's inimitable style, Surviving to Drive is a fascinating and hugely entertaining account of the realities of running a Formula 1 team.

A amazing insightful view from the top of a year in F1
So I can honestly say it is a absolutely wonderful book, written from the point of view of the team principal, it gives the reader an insider perspective of one season of the (in)perfect F1 world, with crazy work hours, stupid rules insane politics and absolutely absurd amounts of money spent on the sport, but at the same time makes you want to runaway and join the F1 circus.

Best audiobook I have heard!
What an audiobook! I listen to a lot of them, and this was by far the most entertaining. Full marks for having Guenther himself read it as well, he can read the phone book and I'd still piss myself.

Gave a nice overview of the creation of the Haas F1 team as well as Guenther’s involvement with the team from the beginning. It was fun to listen to him talk about his past in rally and his thoughts on the 2022 F1 season

Diary of F1's unluckiest guy
Like probably most of the people who will listen to this, I learned of Guenther Steiner from F1: Driven to Survive on Netflix. His blunt, no BS approach would normally turn many people off, but when you contrast it to the disastrous luck he and his team have had pretty much throughout the entire series, it makes him endearing at the same time.
This isn't a biography, it's a diary detailing an entire F1 season from his perspective as the Team Principal. You'll hear his perpsectives on various events and challenges, often written shortly after they take place. He talks not only about the season, but the off times as well, where people in his position don't take any rest, but just switch to longer-term planning. He also sprinkles in the occasional tale of his earlier life in other forms of racing, though I wish there were more of these.
Haas F1 is a team that is rather famous for its bad luck and that's detailed extensively in this year. While so many of the events are beyond Steiner's control, he always reminds us that the buck stops with him and whether things are directly his fault or not, that's part of the job. Even though it's of a struggling team, I think this shows what a high quality leader they have in him, as he's not only unwilling to take crap from others, but also unwilling to pass the buck for misfortune to others.
Steiner's not a professional reader, nor is English his first language and both of those are shown in his reading. I think some people will have a hard time following what he says, but this book wouldn't be the same if he didn't read it so I'm glad he did.
If you're into F1 or just a Guenther Steiner fan, this is an interesting insight into his process and how he handles adversity.

Scattered thoughts.
The book is a diary of scattered (sometimes incomprehensible) thoughts read by Gunther in his thick Italian accent. It’s a tough go and I started feeling that life was too short to continue the struggle. Had to stop after a couple of hours.
