About this listen

It's said that women and men are from two different planets when it comes to communication, but how can they overcome the obstacles of prehistoric times when one of them simply doesn't have the ability to comprehend language?

Ehd's a caveman living on his own in a harsh wilderness. He's strong and intelligent but completely alone. When he finds a beautiful, young woman in his pit trap, it's obvious to him that she is meant to be his mate. He doesn't know where she came from; she's wearing some pretty odd clothing, and she makes a lot of noises with her mouth that give him a headache. Still, he's determined to fulfill his purpose in life - provide for her, protect her, and put a baby in her.

Elizabeth doesn't know where she is or exactly how she got there. She's confused and distressed by her predicament, and there's a caveman hauling her back to his cave home. She's not at all interested in Ehd's primitive advances, and she just can't seem to get him to listen. No matter what she tries, getting her point across to this primitive but beautiful man is a constant - and often hilarious - struggle.

With only each other for company, they must rely on one another to fight the dangers of the wild and prepare for the winter months. As they struggle to coexist, theirs becomes a love story that transcends language and time.

Contains mature themes.

I’m so glad I gave this another try

I started it months ago. Got to chapter 5 or 6 and just gave up. Went back to it yesterday and I’m so glad I did. So good. Lots of naked wrestling, survival, his inner dialogue is so funny at times and wonderfully manly. She is annoying at times, but it would have been an insane experience for her. Although you don’t get any of her inner dialogue until the last 5 min. And the ending. Omg I was in tears, a true HEA for a millennia.

I liked it

I was really moved by how compassionate the both characters were, consistently through the book. There were struggles in communication, but it seemed both were eventually able to identify the underlying good intentions of eachothers actions. I think the story very clearly identified the need for human companionship and the teamwork necessary to get through the difficulties of life.

I do think he should have been able to pick up on language and its practical applications after a life time together. Like talking about going hunting across the lake "tomorrow"... I'm not sure how to communicate and coordinate that between a large group with grunts, but ok. It did clearly seem like he just preferred silence in general and that definitely is a personality type.

Yes there's a lot of sex, but honestly if you are both sexually viable adults thrown together to survive and emotionally lean on eachother through strife, and the story is being told from the perspective of a heterosexual male in a time of very little extra curricular activities or light! It makes sense to me. Similarly, his association between sex and being accepted by his mate, and with holding of sex as feeling rejected and unwanted rung true to me.

One of the best audio books

I loved this book. It was one of the most endearing and engaging pieces I've read in a long time. Hearing the character's internal dialogue was refreshing, simple yet complex, and made me look at all dialogue and silence differently. What a lovely love story. I just wish "Luffs" was on audio too!

Very original

I really enjoyed this book and was impressed by the amount of detail in the story. It was interesting listening to the prehistoric male’s thoughts and be reminded of the human need for survival and protection of tribe. Being in an individualistic society like the city of Toronto, it was refreshing.

Absolutely loved it!.

I loved the story it was very intriguing with the concept of time travel pack to caveman times. There is almost no dialogue in this book, but it still captivated my attention.
If you enjoy it, I also highly recommend the novella called, “Luffs” which is in Beh’s point of view.
My only complaint is the narrator of the story. Some of his pronunciations (Although correct) had me laughing out loud just because of the way he says them.
Overall 10/10. Super captivating story and excellent ending.

Beautiful read

After falling in love with the Jean Auel series, I have been searching for another series that is similar. This book did not disappoint. A beautiful book that is unapologetically real about human nature. I'm hoping Shay will continue to write books in this genre, perhaps a few sequels from the perspectives of the children.

The person above who is ranting, is clearly a prude who doesn't understand that 'good literature' doesn't have to be absent of sexual content.

A Good Listen

It was very unique to tell the story the way the author did. You wait to the very end to learn how she came to be there. Kept me intrigued the whole way through.

DREADFUL, TRASHY PORN

How can so many people have rated this book so highly??? And that it was nominated for a Goodreads award?? This was absolute trash! I am very disappointed in all you women who gave it five stars! You are better than that. There is far better literature out there. Honestly, one can’t even call this literature. It’s my own fault because I didn’t realize this was in the erotica genre and indeed this was vulgar, filthy smut. Every five minutes, his (BLANK) was hard and he wanted to put a “baby in her.” It was funny the first time I read that, but by the 50th time it was so ridiculous. Nothing happened in 95% of this book truly. They basically just gather food, make baskets or plates and have sex every single day for every single chapter. I was looking for a fun read and the premise sounded kind of interesting, so I was hopeful. I couldn’t wait to hear from her perspective how she felt by what happened to her, and I couldn’t wait to hear her make fun of the caveman‘s lack of language and what not, but the author never gave us that perspective. The entire book, we only heard from the dumb caveman who could only grunt and yet in his mind, knew the words inconceivable, placenta and obstinate. This was soooo bad! Truly the most idiotic book I have read in decades and it was especially excruciating because I must always finish books I start. I am shocked by the buzz this book got. What is wrong with this world??? Lol sigh
