Abigail Balfe is a queer, neurodivergent author and illustrator based in Brighton, UK. She was late diagnosed as autistic at 33 and ADHD at 37. Her debut book, A Different Sort of Normal, is a heartfelt, humorous and informative true story about growing up autistic and not knowing she was autistic. This full-colour illustrated book was Puffin’s lead non-fiction title of the year, longlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards’ Best Book With Facts, and shortlisted for Children’s Non-Fiction Book of the Year at the British Book Awards. The book has been included in the Read for Empathy collection, BookTrust’s School Library Pack 2022-23; and a World Book Day scheme, gifting it to over 500 schools across the UK. A Different Sort of Normal was republished in USA and Canada under the slightly different title A Different Kind of Normal, and has been featured in the New York Times. Original storytelling has always been at the heart of Abigail's career and she has spent 12+ years leading social media campaigns for some of the biggest TV & entertainment clients in the world including Sony Music, BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Netflix. Abigail’s storytelling mirrors how her mind works, creating a funny, accessible, authentic, and deeply insightful exploration of the auDHD experience. Abigail is also a Reiki Master with a keen interest in astrology, crystals, trampolining and cats.
