Adam Brookes was born in Canada but grew up in the UK, in a village in Oxfordshire. He went to university at SOAS, University of London, where he studied Chinese. After university he went into journalism and joined the BBC. His first job at the BBC was as a ‘copytaster’, a job now extinct. For many years he was a BBC foreign correspondent. He reported for nearly ten years from Asia, seven of them in China, and for a decade from the BBC’s Washington, DC Bureau, working in radio and television, and online. He reported from many other countries, too, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Mongolia and North Korea. Now a recovering journalist, Adam's new book is 'Fragile Cargo: The WWII Race to Save the Treasures of China's Forbidden City'. It tells the true story of China's imperial art collections, and how in the Second World War a small band of art historians and curators saved them from plunder and destruction at the hands of the invading Japanese. In addition to 'Fragile Cargo', Adam has written well-received espionage novels. He cooks a bit, and runs a lot. He is a mediocre musician, and plays mandolin and bass guitar. He lives in Washington, DC.
