Residing in the heart of Civil War country in western Maryland, Alexander B. Rossino, PhD, is an independent historian and author. His early work focused on the history of World War II, particularly the onset of the war in September 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. Dr. Rossino's research resulted in the publication of Hitler Strikes Poland: Blitzkrieg, Ideology, and Atrocity (Kansas 2003), which examined the confluence of Nazi ideology and Wehrmacht policy to produce crimes against Polish Christians and Jews behind German lines. The book garnered accolades for Dr. Rossino and, eventually, a Choice Book Award. Hitler Strikes Poland is still referred to by scholars studying counter-insurgency campaigns and is considered to be a ground breaking study of German military history. After a hiatus of some years, Dr. Rossino turned his attention to a subject that had long inspired his interest - the American Civil War. He also decided to try his hand at a new form of writing for him - historical fiction - and after several years of research he produced Six Days in September: A Novel of Lee's Army in Maryland, September 1862. The book proved popular among historians and casual enthusiasts alike, leading him to write a sequel titled The Guns of September: A Novel of McClellan's Army in Maryland, September 1862 (Savas 2022). In the meantime, Dr. Rossino returned to writing history, producing Their Maryland: The Army of Northern Virginia from the Potomac Crossing to Sharpsburg in September 1862 (Savas 2021) and co-authoring with Gene M. Thorp The Tale Untwisted: General George B. McClellan, The Maryland Campaign, and the Discovery of Lee's Lost Orders (Savas 2022). Both books challenge long-held beliefs about the 1862 Maryland Campaign and offer new insight into one of the America Civil War's most important periods.
