Aram Kim is a NY-based children's book author/illustrator and a picture book designer. She was born in Ohio, spent her childhood in South Korea, and now lives in Queens, NY. She likes bringing in distinctive South Korean flair to works she creates. Aram is a huge advocate for diversity in children's literature, and a creator of Multicultural Children's Book Day 2018 poster. Her debut picture book Cat on the Bus (2016) was included in Children's Choice Reading List by ILA/CBC as well as a summer reading list by New York Public Library in 2018. Her second picture book No Kimchi For Me!, about family, food, intergenerational connections, has universal themes, and at the same time celebrates Korean culture. It was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, Bank Street’s Best Children’s Books of the Year 2018, and 2018 A Baker’s Dozen: The Best Children’s Books for Family Literacy by The Pennsylvania Center for the Book. Its sequel Let’s Go to Taekwondo! (Bank Street’s Best Children’s Books of the Year 2021) came out in April 2020 and the following book in the Yoomi, Friends and Family series, Sunday Funday in Koreatown came out in March 2021. Both are also selected as Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection. Aram’s next book, Tomorrow is New Year’s Day is scheduled to be published in December 2022. It’s about Seollal, a Korean celebration of a Lunar New Year. With her love of books and sharing stories with readers, Aram won multiple awards, most recently 2022 Mills Tannenbaum Award for Children’s Literacy by Reach Out and Read of Greater NY, given annually since 2013 to a children’s book author or illustrator who is dedicated to promoting a lifelong love of reading in young children. Aram has been invited to numerous book festivals and events to read and to talk about her creative process. She also holds workshops for people who want to start their own children's books.
