Carl Matlock, MD was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1945, attended Butler University in Indianapolis, receiving a BS in Chemistry and Zoology in 1968, and an MD degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1971. He practiced Family Medicine for over 16 years in small rural Indiana communities, Emergency Medicine in various Emergency Rooms for about 23 years in both inner city and rural hospitals, and Geriatrics for 5 years. Including years spent in training, he practiced for 47 years and was Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. In retirement, Carl and his wife, Janet Matlock, enjoy traveling and visiting with family, especially grandchildren, and friends. They live on a farm and love a variety of dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and chickens. Carl reminisces by writing about his career in medicine, particularly the early days of rural family practice, vastly different from the high-tech medicine he later became accustomed to as astounding advances occurred in medicine. In the 1970s, he relied on physical examination, lab tests, EKGs, and radiology to diagnose and treat people. Except for physical examination, these modalities were all much more primitive than options available to practitioners today. During his career, he lived through many changes: solo practices absorbed into large multispecialty groups, paper records evolving into electronic medical records, and the advent of brand-new technologies with CT scans and MRIs transmitted electronically to the office computer. However, the timeless aspects of medicine never changed for him, these were his love for medicine and the many wonderful patients he was privileged to care for over the years. He is active in church and taught Sunday School for many years. His interest in the Bible has taken him on trips to the Holy Land and the writing of two novels about people living in the turbulent times when Jesus walked the earth.
