Catherine Haley Epstein is an artist, award-winning writer, designer, and curator. Most recently she was invited to speak on a panel about artistic perfumery in the United States at the Esxcence conference in Milan, Italy. In 2018 she attended the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference at Middlebury College in Vermont. Also in 2018, she did educational programming around scent at the Portland Art Museum, and with Public Annex, who serves community artists with disabilities. In 2016 she exhibited her experimental fragrance project at the inaugural AIX Scent Fair at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. She is the recipient of the Perfumed Plume Award in Fragrance Journalism, for her writing on the use of scent as an art medium, and a finalist in 2018. She conducts workshops on the use of scent in creative practices and advises companies on scent-related projects. Catherine served as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of Visual Thinking Strategies, a non-profit based in New York City that has developed a proprietary program to teach children to think critically using fine art. In 2017 she was awarded the CEF “Living the Vision” Award for her advocacy and engagement for arts and schools in her local community. She is on her local performing arts center steering committee and has served on the review panel for Visual Artist grants for the National Endowment for the Arts. She was the co-founder of Point & Line, which was an innovative platform testing for deeper dialog with contemporary art and artists. She is a lifelong advocate for arts in schools and has worked with organizations such as Right Brain Initiative, Levi’s Strauss Youth Arts Program, the De Young Museum and Southern Exposure, on projects and in advisory roles to advance learning through the arts. As a gallery owner, she was featured in the New York Times about her change of direction from a successful management-consulting career. As an artist she has exhibited throughout the US, and has attended residencies at Vermont Studio Center, the Headlands Center for the Arts and abroad in Montespertoli, Italy. In 2019 Catherine published the book, "Nose Dive | A Book for the Curious Seeking Creative Potential Through Their Noses". She has written since 2012 on the blog Mindmarrow, Temporary Art Review and Aromatica Poetica. She has a forthcoming essay entitled, "God Nose: The Radical Position of the Immaterial in Olfactory Art" to be published in an academic journal in 2020. Catherine continues to collaborate with artists and writers around the world on unique initiatives that explore intersections between art and other disciplines. Her project On Forgetting—first installed in Portland, Oregon— started the journey to her researching and working with scent and writing this book.
