I am a writer with a special interest in Israeli/Jewish history. Perhaps that is because my mother was a holocaust survivor. Born in Austria, forced to move to France then Belgium in a fruitless attempt to avoid the Nazi onslaught, her searing experience taught me to appreciate courage and determination and has had a profound impact on my worldview. I also am a proud supporter of Israel and became a member of AIPAC’s National Council in 2016. In 2018, I joined the International Advisory Board of Alma, an educational and research center in Northern Israel. Also, I have provided philanthropic help to Kibbutz Hanita, on Israel’s border with Lebanon, and started a program that helps children in need that live along Israel's Northern borders. For the last twenty years, I also have averaged over sixty days a year hiking, skiing, and otherwise enjoying the outdoors in Jackson Hole. In addition, I have journeyed multiple times to Israel both for enjoyment and to interview subjects, and spent much time walking along its borders and battlefields of past wars and flashpoints for future ones. The Six books I have written reflect my passions and experience. 1) Israel's Struggle with Hezbollah: A War Without End. This blow-by-blow history explores Hezbollah’s origins, its malignant growth, Israel’s response, and its present readiness to meet Hezbollah’s challenge. By interweaving thorough research and observations while crisscrossing the region with intimate and thought-provoking perspectives gained from experts, many of which who live in northern Israel, readers will come to learn the dangers Israel faces from Iran’s creation, Hezbollah. 2) Living in Heaven, Coping with Hell: Israel’s Northern Borders—Where Zionism Triumphed, the Kibbutz is Evolving, and the Pioneering Spirit Prevails. Published February 2020. This compelling narrative explains how Jews settled Israel’s northern borders, illuminates the challenges they face, and answers why they remain in the face of danger. 3) The Pivotal Years: Israel and the Arab World 1966-1977. Published 2017. This two-volume work is a comprehensive history of four wars, political intrigue, terrorism and the rise of the PLO, the beginning of the settler movement, a biased United Nations, the oil weapon, and the path to peace one Arab leader traveled. Despite the book's scope, it uses a compelling format to enable the reader to digest the information in bite sized portions. 4) My Jackson Hole Favorites in the Summer, updated in 2021. In this book, I focus on the things I like to do in Jackson Hole and continue to do, not on what the guidebooks tell you. I also equip the reader with practical information on how to make the most of their trip to this beautiful region. 5) Maryland Workers’ Compensation. Published by Thomson Reuters in 2008 and updated yearly since then. This work has frequently been cited by the Maryland Courts of Appeals and is present in the offices of many attorneys practicing workers’ compensation law and in law libraries throughout Maryland. 6) What Really Happens in a Maryland Workers Compensation Claim. This book is a perfect primer for workers injured on the job. I also enjoy engaging with audiences. On many occasions, I have spoken about: • My mother’s Holocaust survivor experience to school children and adult groups. • Israeli history addressed in my books. • Workers’ Compensation law and practice to Union members, organizations, and continuing legal education groups. In 1991, I became a founding partner of Berman, Sobin and Gross, LLP, and its managing partner until my retirement at the end of 2014. During my legal career, I testified before the Maryland state legislature numerous times concerning pending workers' compensation legislation. I also served on two Committees at the request of the Maryland Workers' Compensation Commission. In addition, on many occasions, I acted as a mediator at the request of the Court and private attorneys.
