As a native of Chicago, Dennis Hetzel's fascination with the blues, politics and the Chicago Cubs came naturally. He blended his lifelong passions with his experiences as a journalist, media executive and lobbyist in his award-winning novels that explore the prices paid to succeed at the highest rungs of politics and sports. "Killing the Curse" and "Season of Lies" offer a unique blend of two genres, sports fiction and political thriller, with a strong emphasis on memorable characters and crisp dialogue. His latest novel, "Azalea Bluff," also published by Headline Books, is an "X-Files-style" thriller based on the disappearance of a young journalist after she investigates a mysterious object that lands on the football field of the North Carolina beach town where she grew up. Her father goes on a relentless search for clues that emerge from the ruins left by Nazi Germany. Dennis began his journalism career as a weekly newspaper sports editor in the Chicago suburbs and became an industry leader as an editor, general manager and publisher in Cincinnati, Madison, Wis., and York, Pa. He also taught journalism at Penn State and Temple universities and won numerous awards for writing, newspaper industry leadership and community service. Then, as president and executive director of the Ohio News Media Association in Columbus, Ohio, and president of the Ohio Coalition for Open Government, he achieved major improvements in Ohio's open records and open meetings laws that gained national recognition. Dennis and his wife, Cheryl, met as undergraduates at Western Illinois University, where he majored in political science with the original intent of being a high school teacher. They have three grown children and live in Holden Beach, North Carolina. Alongside his love of writing, Hetzel plays guitar and bass in three different bands.
