Douglas J. Keeling is an attorney who lives and practices law in Wichita, Kansas. He has a degree in Journalism from Kansas State University, and a Juris Doctorate from Washburn University. A large part of his thirty-plus-year legal career has been concentrated in the area of adoption, foster care and related children’s legal issues. He is the author of A Case of Innocence, a Detective Novel (1989, Birch Lane Press), which Kirkus reviews called a “follow-in-the-golden-age-footsteps-of-Spade-and Marlow first novel, with nice, sardonic touches- a strong start.” and Publisher’s Weekly dubbed “an amusing entry in the tough-private-eye genre.”. He is also the author of Family Business (2000, Writer's Club Press), where he explores the fictional intersection of Adoption Law and murder through protagonist Lucas Kelsey, a Kansas City attorney, and in which he draws on his unique knowledge of the worlds of law and adoption, and his roots in hard-boiled detective fiction, to pen a study in crime and human drama as complex as it is compelling. Doug is an ardent traveler, especially when France is on the itinerary, and his newest release is a thriller set in Paris. The Syncopated Heart (2020, Outskirts Press), features Michael McCann, who didn't plan to be riding around in the back of a French Police Inspector's car searching for terrorists in the immediate aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo attacks. He didn't expect to fall in love with a German detective's wife who would, by chance, be in exactly the wrong spot during the subsequent terrorist attacks on Paris in November of 2015. It was not on his agenda to suffer congestive heart failure and end up in a French hospital undergoing life-saving surgery. It certainly wasn't his intention to remain in France indefinitely, leaving behind his Portland, Oregon law practice, family, and life. In fact, he hadn't planned to visit Paris at all during his European sabbatical from his stressful career, but it is there that he finds himself wrestling with personal, romantic, family, health and professional issues as he confronts life-and-death circumstances completely at odds with his original tourist agenda in the City of Light.
