As a young woman, I had the privilege of serving in the United States Navy. While Serving in the Navy, I met an intelligent young man who would become my husband. We started a family young and had seven children. Raising seven children was a blessing, but not easy. With only one income, my husband’s Navy salary, we had some very tight times. I was raised by a woman who imparted so much knowledge on making the most of everything we had available by living off and cultivating the soil. I was proud that I had those lessons to fall back on and I was proud to pass those lessons on to my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and most recently to my great-great-granddaughter. There is great satisfaction in being able to help people learn to do the most with what they have, saving money and resources for their families. Self-sufficiency is a skill that can be learned; I encourage all to learn to grow their own food to that end.
