Whew! I've been on the planet long enough now to be able to tell you that Life only gets better as you get older. I'm delighted about that! I was born and I grew up (more or less) in Golden, Colorado, a very small town surrounded by foothills. There I dreamed and talked to stars and danced around the town. Early on, I got the reputation of being wild and (mostly) lovable and funny. My memoirs, DANCING ALONE and RESURRECTING BUNNY, are, of course, about my experiences after I left the joy and comfort of childhood and launched myself into the "real" world. Oh Lordy! My life got crazier and crazier and darker and darker as I got further and further from my Self, but, hey, we're all here to learn. Right? At 28, I discovered meditation in Santa Fe, NM, and I immediately began my spiritual journey home. The birth of my first child saved me from the uninterrupted self-absorption I was used to. He, along with his brother and sister, have been my teachers and my salvation. Meditation was difficult with all the hollering going on in my house and I longed for a day when I could be *quiet. So when my kids grew up (more or less), I left my marriage and moved part-time to southern France where I bought a tiny, stone farmhouse high on a hill. There I created a garden and learned to speak with my neighbors (and with some birds!). I could say it was blissful, but it was lonely too. I danced alone, created art purely for the joy of it and sang in nightclubs with some French musicians. But mostly I hung out with myself reading Thomas Merton and meditating deeply. It took a while but I began to embrace my solitude. I live alone in a cottage with a lovely garden these days near the town where I grew up and next to 3 of my 5 grandchildren. Blissful - but not without the ongoing struggles with my shadow self. Even so, I am back to that joy of being I had when I was a child. I've discovered I am a being of light. We all are. As my 99-yr-old spiritual companion says, "All we have to do is remember."
