Reviewed by Literary Titan —————————————————————————————————————————— Reviews of :THE LIFE OF LEE LYE HOE ***** James A. Wolter’s The Life of Lee Lye Hoe is a riveting novel that illuminates the remarkable journey of an unsung heroine from rural China to Malaya amidst the tumultuous events of the 20th century. From a young age, Lye Hoe faces immense challenges as she navigates the harsh realities of abandonment and responsibility after her father ran off with the family’s rainy-day fund, never to return, and her mother passes away. Despite these hardships, Lye Hoe exhibits resilience and determination as she manages the family farm and cares for her orphaned cousins. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Lye Hoe, fearing persecution by communist guerrillas, escapes with her cousins aboard a freighter bound for Penang, Malaya. James A. Wolter vividly portrays the harsh conditions Lee Lye Hoe and her cousins face as indentured servants to a cruel mistress. Wolter’s prose is evocative, drawing readers into Lye Hoe’s world with vivid descriptions and heartfelt emotions. The author skillfully weaves historical events into Lee Lye Hoe’s personal narrative, providing a rich backdrop against which her courage and resilience shine brightly. It’s a story that is so humble and heartwarming, and my heart broke when Meow asked if Lye Hoe would die. There is so much emotion in this story, and it's a testament to women's strength in the face of adversity, portraying Lye Hoe as a true heroine whose story deserves to be celebrated. Although it is fiction, it is based on a true story. Readers interested in China’s culture and anyone seeking a good book to read will enjoy The Life of Lee Lye Hoe Reviewed by Carol Thompson for Readers’ Favorite
