James E. Hite is the author of Second Best: The Rise of the American Vice Presidency. Hite is a writer and the lead political scientist at Clackamas Community College. His area of academic focus is the American executive. In addition to writing Second Best, Hite is currently working on a manuscript about President Franklin Pierce and he is also completing a novel. James E. Hite is an interviewed expert in the upcoming American Experience program, The American Vice President. The documentary film debuts October 1, 2024 on PBS. Hite and his family divide their time between the California and Oregon coasts.
