James Wintermote was born and raised in El Centro, CA, and joined the U.S. Navy after graduating high school. After serving six years in the navy with two Western Pacific deployments, he entered the University of Wyoming and earned two undergraduate degrees in Broadcast Journalism and English/Journalism Education. He taught language arts at various high schools in northern Nevada and earned a Master’s degree in teaching. He was admitted to the Great Basin Writing Project (an affiliate of the National Writing Project) and later became its technology liaison. He was selected as a participant for the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund teacher exchange program for the October 2006 cycle and spent two weeks in the Hokkaido prefecture visiting schools and learning about the Japanese educational system. After spending 15 years in public education, he decided to leave the profession and joined the Veterans Health Administration as a training supervisor.
