The novels came first, set variously in Martinique, the Yemen in 1911, France in the late 1960s, and the Suffolk and Sussex coasts of Southern Britain. Her non-fiction books similarly range widely across biography, landscape and gardens, cultural histories of flowers, and early American colonial history. A new book — as yet unpublished — seeks to unravel her lifelong fascination with the German émigré artist, Kurt Schwitters, who spent his last few years in her native Lake District.
