Jerome F. Buting is a practicing lawyer and internationally known speaker on criminal justice issues. His law firm, Buting, Williams & Stilling, S.C. is based in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and his wife, Kathleen Stilling, is one of his law partners. Buting was co-counsel for the defendant Steven Avery in the Teresa Halbach homicide trial featured in the Netflix hit "Making a Murderer," and he has represented many other high profile defendants throughout his 40 year career. His first book, "Illusion of Justice: Inside Making a Murderer and America's Broken System" (Harper 2017) recounts his defense in the Avery case and his career defending the humanity of citizens accused of crime, and his struggles against corrupt actors and the leviathan machinery of the criminal justice system.
