In today's ATS (applicant tracking system)-dominated recruiting space, it's the only way to cut through the obstacles - and the over-reliance on hard skills. “Stop chasing open positions and start building relationships.” If as many as 80% of open positions are filled through referrals, don't you want to be the person who gets a personal introduction and recommendation to the hiring manager or recruiter? For older workers often struggling to overcome ageism, this is the only way to circumvent the outdated and biased practices that seek to exclude them from the workforce. How can it be that the most experienced and strategic professionals find themselves summarily side-lined in their 40s and 50s (not to mention their 60s)? Don't employers understand that years of experience cut through the obstacles to getting things done? Don't they understand that experience brings insight? And for younger workers looking to develop longevity and become leaders, it's never too early to figure out what you're really good at doing, where you can make the most impact, and how to express the great value that you bring to the table. I'm an outlier. I have never worked in HR (like most coaches, career consultants, resume writers etc.). I come to this work as a corporate exec and entrepreneur who got fired a lot over the course of a 35-year career in entertainment and in tech. In fact, I dine out on the fact that in my pre-coaching career, I was fired 39% of the time. Working in a volatile industry forced me to become adaptable and resilient and learn to turn setbacks into successes. After my tech startup tanked when the dot-com bubble burst in 2001, I was at a crossroads. I decided to go back to school to earn a master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology, a branch of positive psychology that emphasizes personal responsibility, acceptance, choice, and forgiveness as a pathway to healing and behavior change. My executive and career coaching practice blends my psychology education with senior-level experience working for companies like DreamWorks and Warner Bros, and entrepreneurial engagements with clients including Sprint, AT&T, Progressive Insurance, and Scottrade. As a coach, I work with individuals and groups. In addition to my personal practice, I have coached executives for companies including Bank of America, Bridgewater Assoc, Softbank, and Levi-Strauss. As an influencer, I have worked on campaigns for Humana Insurance and the Federal National Mortgage Association (“Fannie Mae”). Since 2018, I have been conducting semi-annual career transition workshops for alumni of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, and am a corporate partner in the Alumni Career Services Network. My book, "Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career Over 50," launched on CBS This Morning in 2017 and became an instant Amazon #1 bestseller. The book continues to support older career seekers through a clear, practical methodology.
