Following graduation from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, Joseph McAleer attended St. John’s College at Oxford University, completing his doctorate in Modern History in 1989. His first book, "Popular Reading and Publishing in Britain, 1914-1950," received the inaugural Longmans/"History Today" Book of the Year Award in 1993. He has held a variety of interesting jobs, including university professor, Scottish castle administrator (Hawthornden Literary Institute), corporate PR head, spokesman for the Roman Catholic Church, publisher, and national film critic.
