Karen Frances McCarthy, PhD, is a published author, public speaker, and progressive Spiritualist medium. Formerly a political journalist and war correspondent, she turned her focus to spirituality, spectrality, and consciousness theory after the profound loss of her partner. This life-altering experience deepened her exploration of belief systems surrounding death, dying, and the afterlife, shaping the direction of her future work. Her first book, The Other Irish (Sterling, New York, 2011), was supported by Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs as part of the country’s cross-border reconciliation and anti-sectarian initiative. The work earned her recognition as one of Ireland’s top female broadcasters who have made an international impact. In television, she produced The Crystal Cave and Alchemy: The Art of Spiritual Transformation for Deepak Chopra. Since then, Karen has cultivated a deep interest in the intersections of literature, spirituality, and culture. Her writing explores themes of continued consciousness, encouraging readers to reflect on profound questions of empathy, meaning, and human connection. Her contributions to the spiritual memoir genre have garnered widespread recognition, establishing her as a thoughtful and influential voice within both literary and spiritual communities. Her doctoral research on re-enchantment and postsecularism in contemporary ghost literature informs her holistic approach to consciousness, blending intellectual rigor with spiritual depth. She holds a PhD from the top-world-ranked University of Birmingham, part of the renowned Russell Group of research universities. She has three Certificates of Recognition in mediumship, spiritual healing, and public speaking from the Spiritualist National Union, the governing body of the renowned Arthur Findlay College in England, where she trained. Dividing her time between Dublin and New York, Karen teaches, writes, and maintains a private mediumship practice, where she continues to support and inspire those seeking comfort, clarity, and deeper spiritual connection.
