Dr. Karu Sankaralingam is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his passion for innovation and discovery in technology thrives. He specializes in artificial intelligence and computer chip design, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in these fields, by pioneering ideas in dataflow computing, a paradigm of computer chip designs based on information flow. Interestingly, the core ideas behind dataflow computing — how systems handle and process inter-related information — mirror the intertwined themes of climate change, politics, and culture explored in Dr. Sankaralingam’s fiction writing. His technical insights often crossover with these broader societal questions, influencing both his research and storytelling. Beyond his work, Dr. Sankaralingam is an avid reader, diving into science fiction, climate fiction, and mystic realism. He enjoys works by authors like Cixin Liu, Kim Stanley Robinson, and China Miéville. When he's not teaching or reading, you might find him hiking, running, or fly fishing in and around Madison. He has published over 100 research papers, graduated 9 PhD students, and holds 21 patents. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Wired, and IEEE Spectrum. Dr. Sankaralingam's honors include being named an IEEE Fellow and receiving awards like the Vilas Faculty Early Career Investigator Award, Wisconsin Innovation Award, and IEEE TCCA Young Computer Architecture Award.
