Kate Scharff, MSW is a Washington, DC-based individual, couple and family psychotherapist with 35 years' experience helping people of all ages to successfully navigate a wide range of issues-- including those related to anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship difficulties, parenting, and life transitions. Kate devotes part of her practice to helping individuals, couples and families to navigate separation and divorce. She wears many hats in that area of expertise-- among them family mediator, divorce consultant, divorce coach, parenting coordinator, and Collaborative Divorce practitioner. She is a founding board member and Past President of the DC Academy of Collaborative Professionals, co-founder of the Collaborative Practice Center of Greater Washington, and a founding faculty member of the Collaborative Practice Training Institute. In addition to her clinical practice, Ms. Scharff writes and trains other therapists and divorce specialists, both nationally and internationally. She is the author of several articles and book chapters (including in "An Introduction to Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy," "Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy: Foundations of Theory and Practice," and "Tuning the Therapeutic Instrument: Affective Learning of Psychotherapy"), and the author of the books "We Need to Talk About Divorce: An Important Book About Separation, Step-Families and Feelling Heard," "Therapy Demystified: A Guide to Getting the Right Help (Without Going Broke)," and (with Lisa Herrick, PhD) "Navigating Emotional Currents in Collaborative Divorce: A Guide to Enlightened Team Practice" and "Mastering Crucial Moments in Separation and Divorce: A Multidisciplinary Guide to Excellence in Practice and Outcome." Kate's work appears often in online media, and on her blog, "Relationships on Planet Earth." Kate has been named one of "The DC Area's Top Couple Therapists" by both Washingtonian Magazine and Washingtonian Mom Magazine.
