I practiced pulmonary medicine in Cleveland, Ohio until 2015, then retired to Florida, where I continue to write. Since the early 1980s I have written 26 books, including a worldwide best seller medical text book (All You Really Need to Know to Interpret Arterial Blood Gases), and three award-winning fiction novels. My books have been in 7 different genres: textbook, non-fiction for general audience, contemporary fiction, historical fiction, middle-grade fiction, children's picture book, and short-fiction anthology. My middle grade fiction, THE BOY WHO DREAMED MOUNT EVEREST won 2nd place in the 2016 Florida Writers Association's Royal Palm Literary Awards (RPLA) for the category of unpublished middle grade fiction. LIBERTY STREET: A NOVEL OF LATE CIVIL WAR SAVANNAH won 2nd Place in the 2018 RPLA for published historical fiction. THE WALL: CHRONICLE OF A SCUBA TRIAL, was also an RPLA winner. In addition, several short stories have won FWA awards. In addition to the above award-winning fiction, other popular non-medical works include: STORIES OF INTENSIVE CARE: ETHICAL DILEMMAS AND MEDICAL CHALLENGES IN REAL PATIENTS - 23 real-life patients cared for in the ICU. CONSENTING ADULTS ONLY - contemporary fiction about a young Las Vegas doctor who gets into some troubles - will he survive? OUT OF TIME: AN ALTERNATIVE OUTCOME TO THE CIVIL WAR - historical fiction that sends WWI submarines back in time to help the Confederacy GRAVITY WILL ALWAYS PULL YOU DOWN...UNLESS YOU'RE AN ASTRONAUT. Picture book for elementary grades. WHAT JUST LANDED IN THE VILLAGES? and OTHER SHORT FICTION With NO musical background, in retirement I decided to start piano lessons. To help me learn, I decided to write a syllabus on Basic Music Theory for Beginner-Level Piano Players. Ultimate Chutzpah! It is not for sale or publication (as I freely use pictures and diagrams from the internet), but is posted on my web site at www.lakesidepress.com/PianoSyllabus.pdf. Anyone learning a new subject in depth is advised to write about it - a great way to learn.
