I am at an age when I often evaluate my life and what I've done. I grew up on a tough council estate in Bristol where members of my family worked in the tobacco industry. Those years were the basis for my Coronation Close series. I was a rocker in the sixties and looked good in leather. My late husband rode a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. When I wasn't wearing motorcycle leathers I wore a mini skirt and am sure my hair was longer than my skirt. Having been taught to type at thirteen years of age I ended up working in an office. I hated it but needs must. I had a baby daughter to look after plus we bought a house so it was a case of two wages being better than one. Horses and dogs figured greatly in my life. I used to breed and show Irish Red Setters and regularly qualified for Crufts. Horses were really my daughter's bag. Although I loved them I was a lousy rider, but I could draw them. Used to be quite good at drawing but haven't done much for a long time. Yes, I am a writer, but initially and right up until now, I am a storyteller. I used to tell my siblings stories when we should have been sleeping. That's what I still am. It began in the early nineties. I was broke and jobs were few and far between. So I took the advice of an American friend and called myself a writer. Over the next thirty years I wrote my socks off with some success. I won the BBC New Writers' Award with a script and for three years had my own newspaper column. I had my first book published in 1994. I think it's now close on seventy. No longer dog breeding or riding horses, in 2011 husband and I sold up and sailed away. For five years we lived on a sailing yacht, down through the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean. Very off grid! Very much the gypsy life. There was nothing like sailing beneath a sky full of stars or anchored in a tranquil bay, tapping away on my laptop - another book in the offing. Thank goodness for e-mail! I now live in Bath, not far from where Jane Austen used to live. I am alone but never alone. I have the characters I bring to life in my mind and thence into my books.
