Lynn Macksey is a healthcare professional, published author, and public speaker. She has written four books and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles all in the field of anesthesia. Lynn’s first, best-selling book has been translated into Korean and Chinese. All of her books are sold internationally and are required texts in multiple anesthesia programs throughout the world. Lynn is also a contributing author for other publications. She has worked as a nurse since 1979, first as an LPN and EMT; later, she earned her RN from the University of Florida, her MSN from the University of Pittsburgh, becoming a licensed and practicing CRNA in 2006. After graduating, she briefly worked at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Pittsburgh before moving to NC. There she worked at Wake Med Hospital Raleigh where she was the clinical coordinator between this Level 1 trauma center and the Raleigh School of Nurse Anesthesia. She left Wake Med after seven years and now works at another Level 1 trauma center at UNC Chapel Hill and is a clinical preceptor for Duke University Nurse Anesthesia students and UNC anesthesiology residents. Lynn's latest book, co-authored with her partner of 36 years, is titled "Miracles in Marriage . . ." and explores topics related to successful, long-term relationships. Lynn was recognized early-on as a dynamic public speaker and instructor. She was a national award winning member of the Speech team at the community college she first attended. Then, as the only community college student participant in the nation, she won the Memphis State Undergraduate Honors Conference for her peer reviewed research paper and presentation there. From then on throughout her career, Lynn has been called upon to present lectures and workshops about topics as varied as: living wills, BLS and ACLS, CCRN topics, bioterrorism, addiction in the anesthesia provider, aspirated bezoars, trauma resuscitation, medical-legal implications for the CRNA, pain, and shock states. She has given multiple lectures at the Raleigh School of Nursing, provided keynote speeches at regional, state, and national conventions throughout the U.S. Recently, Lynn’s third book, Surgical Procedures and Anesthetic Implications: A Handbook for Nurse Anesthesia Practice received 5-stars and a perfect 100 from Doody’s Review Service. According to Kathleen M. Woodruff, RN, MS, CRNP, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing: “This well-written and well-organized book focuses on the primary concerns of the anesthesia provider and delivers clear and up-to-date information. This is a valuable resource for CRNA clinicians and students.” Lynn, herself, is a valuable resource. Her ability to use her extensive clinical and academic background to connect with her audience, while providing engaging and poignant examples to help teach, all add up to an energized public speaking style. One of Lynn’s repeat seminar attendees said it best: “Lynn’s presentations stick with you. She explains the subject so I can understand it.”
