Born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1968, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow started his career as a fish farmer. When the Balkan conflict began, he and Fergus, his brother, were so moved by the scenes on television that in 1992 they gathered a jeep load of aid and joined a convoy travelling to Medjugorje in Bosnia. What was meant to be one off effort gave birth to Mary's Meals, a global movement which today provides daily school meals to over 1.6 million of the world's poorest children. The vision of Mary's Meals (named after Mary the Mother of Jesus) is that every child in this world might receive a meal in their place of education - so that their immediate need for food is met and at the same time, by enabling them to gain an education, they and their communities might be provided with an escape from poverty. Magnus, as founder and CEO of Mary's Meals International, has been given numerous awards: in 2010 he was named as one of CNN's 'Top Ten Heroes' by broadcaster CNN, was awarded an OBE in 2011 and in 2015 was listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine. He is the recipient of several honorary degrees and is a prolific key note speaker at a huge variety of events around the world - from the annual World Food Prize to the international Youth Festival in Medjugorje. His first book, The Shed that Fed a Million Children, published in 2015, reached The Sunday Times best seller list and has since been published in many languages. His second book, Give, has just been published by Harper Collins. Magnus, who still lives in Dalmally, the small village in Scotland where he grew up, is married to Julie, a former nurse who also gave up her job to drive trucks of aid from Scotland to Bosnia. They have seven children.
