Owls drive me crazy, but in a good way. Yes, they are often hard to find, but when you finally spy one, you're in for a fascinating peek at a very cool bird. I've been studying, writing and speaking about and photographing owls for more than four decades. (Yikes, I sound like I'm really old but I'm not THAT old.) My wife Marcia and I care for a parliament of owls that can't return to the wild because of various disabilities. Many of the owls were hit by cars and suffered wing or head injuries. We give the owls comfortable lodging, excellent meals, super health care and once in awhile each owl works as an educational ambassador appearing before groups of excited students, birders, conservationists and anyone who loves owls. Together we have spoken to more than half a million people across New England since 1994. Of course, in United States you can't have an owl as a pet. We have to maintain federal and state licenses for the owls to be used as educational ambassadors. "Owling: Enter the World of the Mysterious Birds of the Night", my first book, published in 2019 by Storey Publishing. In it you'll meet all 19 species of owls that nest in North America, north of Mexico. You'll also meet seven people who work with owls in various, sometimes surprising ways. "Owling" was chosen by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Subaru as the best science book for middle graders for 2020. But don't let the middle graders thing fool you. Kids from 3 to 103 will find something of interest in Owling! In April 2022, my second book "The Snowy Owl Scientist" was published by Harper Collins. It follows Denver Holt of the Owl Research Institute through a field season of Snowy Owl research on Alaska's North Slope. While I was photographing Snowy Owls on the tundra, I had to watch my back because polar bears are frequent along the coast. And yes, I saw my first polar bear. And yes, a photo of she or he is in the book along with arctic fox, brown lemmings (yum, lemmings), Pomarine Jaegers, Long-billed Dowitchers and loads of pictures of Snowy Owls resting, flying, eating, incubating, brooding, preening, stretching, bathing, hooting and feeding super fuzzy chicks. "The Snowy Owl Scientist" will be the latest in a long line-up of excellent kids' books in the Scientists in the Field series. My friend Sy Montgomery, prolific author and wide ranging naturalist started the series years ago. She's penned some 15 books for it. Anyway, if you want to receive an autographed copy of Owling or The Snowy Owl Scientist, you can email us at eyesonowls at earthlink.net. You can view our website at eyesonowls.com.
