When I was 14 years old, I told my father, a special agent for the FBI, that I hoped to be a writer when I grew up. I was lucky to know then what my heart wished to pursue--to share stories about love, our connection with one another as well as to explore the mysteries in life that taunt all of us. My father, who was drying the pots and pans in the kitchen when I shared my life's ambition with him, beamed right back: "Can't you figure out something more practical to do?! There are enough writers in the world!" Yes, there are many writers in the world. We are all storytellers. We each have our unique story, and it's our stories like stars that brighten up the night. Anyhow, thanks to my father, who no doubt meant well, I've learned that "discouragement" can be a veil for secretive, deep hope. I also grew up with a younger brother who has Downs syndrome. From Joe, I have learned how appearances can be misleading when it comes to defining somebody's natural potential! My message to my readers is to pursue your natural potential, your voice in the world, your dreams no matter your age, even when those who love you may not get your vision at first!
