When Melissa Fredericks began teaching over twenty one years ago, she never imagined the breadth of experiences she would have or the passion she would grow to feel for the profession. She wrote the book From the Toilet to the Scaled Universe; Finding the Joy in Teaching in the hopes that by sharing her stories of challenges turned into triumph, she will inspire other teachers to find the joy in teaching even when the obstacles are many. ● Melissa has taught both general education and special education spanning grades pre-k through high school. ● In addition to teaching, Melissa has a private Math tutoring business and has written items for the NYS math 3-8 exam. ● Melissa has co-written and taught many expedition (cross-curricular unit plans) while working at a charter school for grades K-4 on topics such as settler life, Native Americans, ancient sea creatures, and city infrastructures. ● Melissa has written and taught math enrichment projects for grades k-3 such as Learning about Pioneer History through Fractions, Quilting and Geometry.. ● Melissa has led workshops at the Expeditionary Learning National Conference and Genesee Community Charter School Site Seminar on topics such as expedition planning, behavior management and fostering math engagement. ● Melissa was awarded a Fund for Teachers grant in 2013 to travel the Oregon trail in order to collect primary source documents, artifacts and photographs to enhance her settler life curricular units in grade K-3. ● Melissa was awarded the Bostitch Creativity grant in 2019 for her lesson plan titled Around the World through Cooking, Writing and Art. ● Melissa has recently begun writing as a way to share the joy she feels as a teacher and provide inspiration and advice to fellow teachers. From the Toilet to the Scaled Universe; Finding the Joy in Teaching is her first book. She also has a blog on Medium called Teaching to Inspire. She was selected as a finalist for the September 2019 issue of Educational Leadership with my article Off to a Good Start. She wrote an article called "From Marcy to Haystack and 44 Mountains Between" for "The Geneseean." ● Melissa lives in Rochester, NY with her two teenage daughters. They enjoy climbing mountains together and spending as much time outdoors as possible.
