Michael Raymer is the author of two books - Quantum Physics: What Everyone Needs to Know (2017), and The Silicon Web: Physics for the Internet Age (2009), which can be read as "popular" general audience books, or as textbooks for a new kind of college course for non-science students. Michael Raymer is Knight Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon, indicating his broad activities in science research and education. He began his career as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, and later moved to Oregon, where he helped develop and direct the research center now called the Center for Optical, Molecular and Quantum Science. His research interests are quantum mechanics, quantum information science, and nonlinear optics and laser physics. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). He has served as a member of the Editorial Boards of Physical Review Letters and Journal of Modern Optics, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the OSA.
