Michael Jay Steen was born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1965, where he lived until 1989. His sister Nancy moved to Florida in 1986 and mike followed in 1989. Mike fell in love with the sunshine state and all that it had to offer. Mike was a pressman in Columbia where he printed books and magazine on very large presses. Once in Florida he found work doing the same. After meeting a friend Ronnie Hall at church and being introduced to Firefighting, Mike new he had found his calling. He began volunteering at the Auburndale Fire Dept. He relentlessly pursued his new passion, by first going to Emergency Medical Technician at Polk State Collage. Then he attended fire school at the Lake County Vocational Technical collage in Eutis, Florida. Before he was even finished with fire school, Mike got hired on at Hardee County Fire Rescue. He enjoyed his time working there and gained a lot of experience. Mike worked in Hardee County for 6 months. Michael applied for and was hired at the City of Winter Haven Fire Department Florida, in September of 1992. Once there Michael worked hard obtaining classes and rose up through the ranks from Firefighter to Driver and ultimately to Lieutenant. In 1999 the city offered to pay for Michael to attend the Police Academy because the police department wanted some medically trained personnel on their Emergency Response Team.(ERT). Michael enthusiastically agreed and attended Police Academy and graduated in the BLE 99-02 academy. This was a 10 month commitment and Michael looks back fondly on that time. Michael spent the next few years working as a Reserve Police Officer and getting the needed skills for his next endeavor. Mike then started taking a series of Fire Investigator classes. With a new incoming chief Tony Jackson, Jackson wanted to start fire investigations within the department. Michael along with several others eagerly join this new job. Over the next few years, Mike worked as a Fire Investigator/Inspector.. He worked many Arson cases and investigated and arrest suspect. Michael worked such cases as Arson/Attempted Murder as one individual tried to burn down a house with an ex friend and his mother inside. Mike investigated cases involving a Mother who locked herself in a room with her children and caught the room on fire killing herself and her children. Michael also worked many home and auto fires where the occupants intentionally started the fires for profit. Michael last 10 years of service was in the field of fire investigations. Michael has an extraordinary love for the boating and the salt life community and has been a avid boater for more than 25 years. He is also a certified charter boat captain. Michael combines his unique experiences in fire investigations and the salt life into some riveting novels involving of arson and homicide. His latest Caribbean adventures series, though Fiction is also based on true stories of he experiences. His readers are captivated with the adventures and education on the subject of arson in the process.
