Miriam Manderson BA(Hons) PGCE, NPQH is headteacher of a large London secondary school of 1200 students. From very humble beginnings in the North-West of London, has worked her way up through the education system and the leadership ranks within it. Miriam has over 25 years of teaching experience with inner-London secondary schools and 12 years of senior leadership experience and coaches a variety of aspiring leaders and headteachers. Miriam started as a headteacher in 2019 and has faced the challenges of leading a school through the coronavirus pandemic. She has an insatiable appetite to reverse the effects of disadvantage as well as to enhance the development and command of the English language and literacy in young people believing that this empowers them to have a voice in this world. Her vision for education is that there exists true equality of opportunity through an equal status from one school to the next. Miriam speaks 4 languages and believes that language provides a window to making understanding our world. Alongside her passion in education, Miriam has been a key contributor to the ‘Look Like Me Book Challenge’, an initiative which supported 30 children authors to write one collective community book ‘The Popcorn House’ in an effort to counteract the underrepresentation of children of Black and other ‘minority’ ethnicities in children’s publications.
